I’m not sure I understand that. It’s not like it’ll be the first awful comic book movie.
It’ll be the first real stinker of this round, in my opinion. Starting in 2000 we’ve gotten 2 good X-Men movies, a great Spider-Man movie, a decent Hulk movie, a decent LxG movie, a good Punisher movie and a [reportedly, I haven’t seen it yet] Good Hellboy movie.
Note that these are just my opinion and I’m aware that a lot of people didn’t like LxG or the Punisher but I can promise you Catwoman will attract a lot more attention than those movies and, if it really does turn out to be a stinker, it will do a lot more damage to the genre.
Make sense now?
What about Daredevil? I didn’t see it myself, but it didn’t get good reviews.
I do understand your point, although not all of the movies you mentioned were well-received. I think it takes more than one failure to damage a genre- on the contrary, studios have been shown proof over the last few years that comic book movies can bring in huge amounts of money, especially if some effort is put into them. Until those movies start consistently failing, I think they will continue to churn them out.
I remembered it right after I posted. I’m surprised I forgot DD because it’s actually been one of my favorites so far. It seemed to get good reviews up front and then started to get some pretty sorry ones.
Opions be damned in the studios’ eyes on that one though - it made $27 million over its budget.
Opinions. I need to get some sleep.
I’m not too worried about that. If you look at the recent track record, the Marvel movies have been good, and the DC movies have been bad, for the most part. This is just continuing that theme. I mean, really, if Batman and Robin didn’t deter (whichever studio it was) from doing a good job with X-Men, Spider-Man and the rest, then why would this?
Wait. Which Hellboy movie was good? And which Punisher movie? Are you talking about overseas bootlegs with scenes from Debbie Does Dallas spliced in?
Seriously, though, you’re entitled to your opinion about those movies, but even the frothing, twitching libertarian in me wants to revoke your right to have an opinion about the Catwoman project (other than “Oh my crapping fecal butt-droppings, this is BAD”). This thing is going to spawn the same sort of friendly competition between movie reviewers that Gigli did: they will vie with each other to see who can make the most kitty-litter puns in a nasty review.
Halle Berry is attractive, and leather outfits are attractive. But Catwoman is supposed to wear a catsuit. Not a bikini, not leather lingerie, not some weird latex boob-holster… just a plain old catsuit. The mask is open to interpretation, but I’ll give you a hint: Halle Berry has a pretty face as a whole; cover it up at your peril. Michelle Pfeiffer has lovely eyes and great lips, so the mask worked well for her.
And if you’re going to stray so far from canon to change her name, her origin story, and her outfit… well, don’t expect the fans to show up anytime soon. Remember, they’re fans of the character – with her original name, outfit, and backstory intact. I mean, if Batman were renamed “Evan Billings,” and got his start when a radioactive bat bit him while he was at an investment meeting, and decided to dress up in a red-and-blue suit with a big “B” on the chest, I don’t know any Batman fans who would show up.
