I first met this fellow about a year ago, when I happened to be involved with someone else. Since that relationship ended, I’ve run into this guy a few times- we are at the same university, have mutual friends and mutual interests. I saw him today at a lecture and, well, asked him out. First time I’ve ever done that! Turns out that he is quite interested in another girl, and has been for a while, so it was essentially a no for me. He was really straightforward and nice about it, though!
So, anyone else have a good/bad/funny/embarrassing story from the first time they asked someone out on a date?
14-15 y.o., about 2 months into freshman year of high school. I had just started at this district so I knew nobody. After biology class, I went up to this one girl who was pretty cute and asked if she wanted to go out sometime. She said she had a boyfriend. I then sped away quite quickly. I mean, I practically ran away. THAT was the most embarrassing part.
I asked a girl to a semi-formal (celebrating the end of 8th grade). We were sent a letter from the school EXPLICITLY telling us NOT to ask for a date! (at least one other guy ignored the edict) She told me she was unsure she’d be going. (academically driven wallflower) She DID come, and I tried to gently coax her (using a friend) to pose for a picture.
OK, my contribution. About a year or so after joining my Toastmasters group, a cute girl joined as well. Since I was in Toastmasters, I didn’t really have the confidence to ask her out, but eventually I did. She shot me down, but politely, saying that she “doesn’t date people who she works with”, and Toastmasters is included in that. I was OK with that, and we both remained in the club, and we’re both friends to this day.
Flash forward almost 20 years (about 18 or so). I’m still in the club (celebrating my 20th anniversary next month), she’s still in the club, and her husband is still in the club! It turns out that while I was getting up my confidence another guy in the club asked her out, and they started dating and hitting it off. (I think they first went out about a week before I asked). They guy joined between the time I did and she did.
No hard feelings, because both her and her husband are great friends (probably the closest Toastmasters friends I have), and they are really perfect for each other.
In a bar, with heavy Scotch influence (a divey bar, with limited females). A not-so-bad-looking girl walks in, and I had recently broken up with my ex. At my buddy’s urging, I offered to buy her a drink. Response: “Go to hell.”
Second attempt:
Me: “Listen, I wasn’t trying to be a dirtbag. It’s just that you came in all alone and I thought I’d buy you a drink. That’s all. What’s your name.”
Her: “My name is go to hell.”
Thanks to my buddy for trying to get me past being upset by picking some new chick up. Bastard.
