I just did my first vanity search...

So I just did my first vanity search. I need to do more of these because people are talking about me more than I thought! Please indulge my insightful (and possibly masturbatory) dive into the results…

Result number 1. I know people knew FireUnderpantsBoobs. I didn’t realize that people remember to associate FUB with me. Same girl, new name. I gotta thank a35362 for calling me cute and sassy. The reason I changed my name was because I didn’t think anyone remembered who I was based on my posts–just by my kee-razy name. It’s really neat to me that Santos L Halper (and probably others, I would guess) know that FUB is now AS. :slight_smile:

Result number 2. Naming a Venus Fly Trap. My username comes up as a suggestion. I get it, because the two appendages of the plant “snap” together. But Gyrate must have had me in mind, since (s)he [apologies that I don’t know your gender; I’m really bad with stuff like that] appended the -pity ending and eliminated the space. Most people I know say “Aw, Snap.” Or used to, at least. No one really says it anymore, which makes me hate my current username. C’est la vie.

Result number 3. Didn’t want to read the whole thing, so I have no idea what it’s about. At first I thought Davebear was calling me an idiot, but that’s because I had a temporary lapse in reading comprehension. I’m better now. I guess Davebear was saying that I zinged MachineHead, but my zing wasn’t biting enough (or frequent enough) to warrant my own Pit thread by MH. Pity, that.

Result number 4. Much in the same vein as number 1.

Okay so after that fun romp I searched for FireUnderpantsBoobs.

Result number 1. Awww, someone missed me. Neat! :slight_smile:

Result number 2. More people missing me, and being excited at my return. Wait, Thea Logica is now The Asbestos Mango?? I thought that was someone new. I’m so bad at keeping track of name changes.

Wow, this is really getting masturbatory. But we must push on in the name of science!

Result number 3. I must specifically point to Kyomara’s post, because I didn’t realize I had that as a sig. How crass of me. :smiley: Anyway, I am very much a girl, very much attracted to boys (not boobs), and I took the inspiration for FUB from a 5-year-old.

Alright, that looks like most of them. The ones that I’m not subscribed to, at least. And I should know what people are saying about me in the subscribed threads.

What interesting things have you found through vanity searches? What totally-not-interesting-to-anyone-else-but-you things have you found through vanity searches? If you haven’t done a vanity search every, I highly recommend one! It will make you feel good about yourself, unless you say a lot of stupid things, in which case you might find a lot of Pit threads about you. Not sure on that one. Either way, try it and post the results!

I did a brief vanity search. From what I could tell, most times my name was mentioned, it was in the context of:

emekthian- (stuff relevent to my previous post)

other doper- (stuff relevent to that doper’s previous post)

Aaaanyway, I only found one thread where my name was mentioned and I hadn’t participated in it. It was the Frankenstein’s Doper thread. I got a lot of mentions! I don’t remember ever seeing this thread go by, lol.

I’m too depressed to look. People cared when my cat died. I know that much at least. But I still feel like too much of a loser here to think anything but that.

That’s what I thought too, yellowval. I didn’t think there were going to be any threads that I wasn’t aready subscribed to. I feel like a no-name around here (now that I’ve gotten rid of FUB, at least). I won’t badger you to search, but you might be surprised.

My first vanity search… two unexpected results.

(1) In a Doper crossword puzzle thread, the clue is: Strangely, a final Southerner (6). Someone guessed “lainaf”, but it was never confirmed as being correct. I don’t get it at all.

(2) In a thread “Dopers I’d Like to Meet,” Siege mentioned me! And now she can find this thread if she does a vanity search. You’re a sweetheart, Siege.

When there are threads asking "Who is your favorite/least favorite/smartest/dumbest/kindest/cruelest/smartass/funniest doper, my name never comes up. If I ever want to drop a sledgehammer on my toe, maybe I’ll do a vanity search instead. Maybe I’ll start a thread called “What insignificant dopers do you not give a rat’s part about?” Then I’d see my name in a thread. :frowning:

Hm. A vanity search for me turns up a gajillion* results. Most of them seem to be responses to posts I made. However, there are a number of mentions of me in threads I haven’t posted to… but a quick check shows most of those are being referred to by Dangerosa. What with being married to her, I guess I should expect that.

I do a vanity search every few months. The usual results are threads in which I posted. The second biggest group are mentions of the Pixar movie. Actual mentions of me in threads in which I wasn’t posting barely pull ahead of threads mentioning the Jules Verne or Winsor McCay characters. But my last vanity search did lead me (via a 20,000 Leagues Beneath the Sea reference) to a cool movie quiz thread I had missed when it was first posted.

I used to do vanity searches every so often, a few years ago. I realized that in the huge swarms of people visiting the MB, I was not likely to be remembered. And you know what? That’s ok. I’ve laughed a lot, and learned a lot. I’ve met one person through the boards who I became close friends with it. That enough is worth all the time I’ve spent surfing the board, knowing full well few would remember me. That’s not what it’s about to me.

unclviny, on the upside they’re not saying anything bad about you, on the downside they’re not saying anything good about you either.

This thread inspired me to do my own vanity search for the first time. Thinking I was pretty much a non-entity on these boards and expecting only 3 responses, it turns out I underestimated how much people talk about me.

I got 4 responses :stuck_out_tongue: And all threads that I had participated in. Not that I really care, I think I’ll go back to lurking and acting like I don’t exist.
