I just saw "Spamalot", and...

I can’t remember- is the person in seat D010 a plant ?

Brilliant, funny, fast, well -acted, well-sung, well-danced. Complete pleasure. The survey taped to every seat was a little bit…weird.

" Would you come to see Spamalot again? "

No. Uh… no. But I sure did dig it this time !

Anyone know the straight dope on the Person With The Grail ? I just did a Search, and it didn’t hit.

Cartooniverse

My understanding is the it is a random person. When we went the person was in row F, I am not sure of the Seat. I saw it last year.
That reminds me, I haven’t been to a play this year. I should correct that soon.

I really enjoyed the play. I was singing “Always Look On the Bright Side of Life” for days after seeing it. Drop of the hat, completely inappropriate places. It was like being a teen again. Glad to hear you enjoyed it. Who is in it now?

Jim

When I saw it, the person chosen was named “Merlin,” which so threw the cast he had to show them ID.

The show itself was no more than “cute,” but the performances (particularly Tim Curry and Sara Ramirez) were spectacular.

I saw it in Chicago this summer. Not the original Broadway cast, but still very well done.

Loved it! Our person was in row B–I think it’s random.

I dont’ remember a survey (although we lit out of there to catch a Sunday afternoon train, which only run every other hour). Damn-I want to do the survey!

I loved it because theater people seem to have forgotten that this type of entertainment is musical comedy, not musical pompous overblown schmaltz, but I digress.

<–cracking up. The Ad on the SDMB page is for " The Jesus Camp Movie".

I agree, elanorigby. The self-effacing, ironic, clever, bawdy humor was perfectly suited. In a weird way, it felt a lot like Pippin with tongue in cheek. At the end, you admit you’re on a stage, with a proscenium, in front of people.

Hmmmm. The image looked 3-D on stage but now I am guessing that the huge logo of the seat number was video projected, hence the random choice element.

I didn’t know that Tim Curry originated that role. He’s gone from sweet transvestite to sleek in-transit knight?

When I saw it (on Broadway) the seat was C101. I’m not sure why I remember this though. It would seem to be nicely random.

As I said, I saw it on Broadway with mostly the original cast, though Hank Azaria was out by the time I saw it. I thought the show was incredibly well done and had the perfect amounts both of divergence from the The Holy Grail and of reference to other Monty Python movies and sketches.

I’m pretty sure it was random. When I saw it Tim Curry was out for the night  . The understudy did a good job and the rest of the original cast was there. The person chosen was an English tourist. Arthur said “I hope your not the president of the Tim Curry fan club”.

Well it worked at the time.

Loach, the same thing happened the night I saw it. Did you see it last June 21 in Manhattan, by any chance?

I saw it twice in New York, about 6 months apart. The seat was C101 (both times), and the seat’s occupant was Jewish (both times). We thought the first time, the guy was a plant. It was within the first month after the show opened. The second time, it was obviously not a plant, or a very good one.

I hear they originally used C101 all the time, until that ticket went for an unholy amount on ebay. Now the seat is chosen randomly.

I’ve seen the show three times, and loved all of them. Hank, David & Tim were marvelous (though I wish Doug Sills had done the show), but they are bringing in good replacements.

I enjoyed the show quite a bit, but I have to admit that I was very underwhelmed by Tim Curry; maybe I caught him on an off knight (get it? ).

I loved David Hyde-Pierce, though.

I’d have to find the ticket stub but that sounds about right. You were looking quite dapper that night.

FYI - Spamalot is coming to the Wynn hotel here in Las Vegas for an open-end run, and I believe it begins next year. (The Producers is opening at the Paris soon as well.)

The story is that it was C101 all the time. Someone found out, got that seat and decided to auction it on eBay. When the producers of the show found out, they decided that they didn’t want it to be something that people fought over, or something that was already known at the outset. So, at no little cost (as there is a big drop down piece of stagework which announces the seat under which the grail is stowed) they changed the seat on that very show.

They said it was worth it for both the integrity of the show … AND to see the look on the guys face after he’d paid so much for that one ticket and then his seat didn’t get announced.

So what exactly happens to the person in the lucky seat?

He (or she) gets called up onto stage with the cast.

Ditto. I was heartbroken, but had to admit the understudy kicked ass.

They are also handed a small trophy, a laugh is had at their expense ( gently ) by the cast, and they’re sent back to their seat.

I am glad they altered it. It’s one thing to break the fourth wall and quite another to lose control of the house to eBay. They were wise to do as they’ve done.

I watched the woman in the seat- and you are all correct, it was D101, not D010. Aisle seat, fourth row, center, stage left side. Easy to get her up and onto stage. When the show ended, she got up, quite clearly “with” the gentleman in D102, and a few audience members shook her hand, said things or asked to see the trophy.

If she was a plant, she was brilliant. It was when she walked up the aisle with the guy, that I figured, she must be a real person.

The Lady of The Lake reminded me a whole lot of Madeline Kahn. In her prime, she sang the role of the Priestess of The Golden Ram in Two By Two, a musical based on Noah’s Ark. Infamous for her vocal gyrations in Young Frankenstein, Khan had serious chops- the amusing tune " The Golden Ram " ends on a High C. Tough to do- the role was written specifically for her.
