To my surprise, I actually like it. For the first time in years, I don’t find myself making a flying leap for the remote control the second The Daily Show ends.
I just assumed that he was filming without an audience, just the crew present.
I have mixed feelings. Sometimes it’s hilarious and sometimes it isn’t funny at all. When Corolla gets on a roll and extemporizes something he can kill. Many times he doesn’t. Did you see the one with Roseanne the other night? Terrible.
I’m watching this episode now… is there an audience? It’s like he has the opposite of a laugh track on.
I’ve enjoyed the show so far, but I agree it’s very hit-or-miss.
He announced at the beginning of the episode with Roseanne that he was filming without an audience. You can sometimes hear the stage crew laughing in the background.
I think getting rid of the audience is a terrible, terrible idea. Two weeks into the show is a little early to jump the shark like that. I really hope they bring the audience back.
I suspect the audience chose not to be there. I mean, would you sit through that dreck?
I watched three episodes, and every one of them truly sucked. He interviewed Buzz Aldrin, and it was painful to watch.
This is awful. It doesn’t look “more intimate” because of the size of the set, and he keeps pausing like he’s waiting for people to laugh. It’s not working at all, and there’s too much dead air. I know no one’s there and it’s still hurting me.
Incidentally, they played a little clip of the Steve-O debacle. Good lord…
¿que?
If you look back a page, there’s a thread on it. It looks like he was trashed beyond belief. He broke a table and almost strangled Adam, it appears. During tonight’s show, Carolla read an e-mail where the guy said he didn’t even remember being on the show, but that he was proud of his appearance. Which makes me wonder if we can have Steve-O put down.
Dropping the audience was definitely a bad move. Aside from the dead air, the lone guy laughing in the background gives it a really pathetic vibe. I feel like I’m watching a good friend doing a bad performance, alternating between being pleased at the performance and wincing.
It’s sad, because I kinda like the stuff he does; I’ve listened to love line for years now, and his rants can be good fun. But it seems like he needs a co-host - someone to play off of.
I see now that they’re giving one of the Daily Show correspondents a talk show, too. Between that, this, Mind of Mencia, that new David Spade show… Comedy Central seems to be grasping for straws trying to follow up on Chappelle.
It’s not a talk show, but that one’s been in the works for some time.
Yeah, Colbert’s had one in the oven for a while now. I wonder when that’ll ever happen.
The premiere is on October 17.
Adam Carolla is one of the funniest guys on the planet, but he comes off rather stiff on TV. He seems much more relaxed on the radio and he just riffs on stuff and it’s hilarious. The way the show is done isn’t helping him, either. Yes, getting rid of the audience was a horrible mistake, and I don’t why they did that. They also cut out all the bells & whistles, and it has the look of a bad public-access show now. But it wasn’t done well before, either. The way they had Adam just sitting in the middle of the stage in a chair in front of the audience looked really awkward. There’s a reason why talk-show hosts put a desk in front of themselves. It’s not just a place to put their coffee cup - it allows them to look more comfortable and relaxed. And I agree that he needs a co-host to play off of. Even though he has a remarkably quick wit, his rants tend to trail off awkwardly when he’s not talking to anyone. It seems like maybe Comedy Central just cut the show down to bare bones, moved the time slot back 1/2 hour when most people are in bed, and are just waiting for the show to die a natural death.
That was my feeling exactly.
I actually really like Mind of Mencia. He’s obnoxious and blunt. It’s great.
I hope The Colbert Réport does well – actually, no, I take that back. I hope it tanks so that he’ll have to return to The Daily Show.

I saw about three minutes of "Too Late . . . " and thought it was the worst three minutes of TV I’ve ever seen. I haven’t given it a second chance.
