I can’t stand morning zoo type shows. The local ones are the worst–I’d rather puncture my eardrum with a bowling pin.
I’m not and never have been a Howard Stern Show fan, but I like him. His show was good, but just not to my tastes.
I really like Adam Corolla. The Man Show was pretty dumb but had its moments. But where I really thought he was funny was on Love Line. The callers were inane beyond belief, but I LOVED his rants and asides and monologues. They were usually spot-on, and always funny.
He was interviewed on Morning Edition the other day…so I thought I’d tune in to his show. Unlistenable.
So I tried again this morning.
What IS it about these morning zoo shows that make them think I want to listen to an unfunny host surrounded by unfunny sycophantic co-workers sit around and talk about the most boring, lamest, dumbest shit possible???
I’m sooooooo disappointed. I dunno. Maybe I’m getting old.
Is it bad? Damn. I don’t listen to morning radio, and even with him hosting it’s no shock that a morning radio show is bad. But it’s still a disappointment. Man do I ever miss him on Loveline. Dr. Drew straight up can’t host on his own, and most of the guests are not enough to make up for the loss.
I thought it was pretty bad, too- I listened to a bit of it on Wednesday morning. Maybe he needs some time to “find himself” in that role. I’m sure it’s not easy to do what he’s doing- following the hugeness of Howard Stern. Maybe he’ll be better in a few weeks. Maybe not.
I too miss Adam on Loveline. I barely listen to it anymore. I have listened to part of his new show the last few mornings, and I think I agree with you: it is, for the most part, uninteresting and unoriginal. Maybe it’s a question of context; Loveline gave Adam a very specific context, and his humor worked well in that context, either in commenting on that context or just spinning off it in order to go off on a purposeful tangent. Perhaps it is just a question of “finding his legs,” and it will be great in a few months, but right now his show is about nothing, has no point, and just falls flat.
And yeah, the cadre of grating nobodies surrounding him doesn’t help.
I’m not sure this thing will last. I was actually tempted to call Loveline last fall and warn him, because I had misgivings upon first hearing the rumor, but I know he would have just smacked me down and not listened anyway. (Nor should he have, really–I don’t blame the guy for trying to raise his position in the world.)
The bottom line seems to be, Adam moving to his own show weakened both himself and Loveline. Maybe it’s a “be careful what you wish for” situation. Too bad. Loveline was a lot of fun for a lot of years.
I used to watch Loveline on MTV as much for his interplay with Dr Drew as for the weird calls. Sometimes Dr Drew seemed to find it difficult to determine what to say to him, so he’d just ignore Adam.
Nitpick: It’s Carolla. The Corolla is a small Toyota sedan.
I haven’t heard his new radio show, but from what I’ve seen of Too Late With Adam Carolla on Comedy Central, Adam’s just no good on his own. It’s a shame.
I’m not quite as disappointed as the rest of you; his rants and observations are spot-on as usual (of course, most of them have already been broached on Loveline). I am, however, disappointed in his two compatriots, Dave Damashek and Rachel Perry. They’re not at all in stride with Adam, and they’re particularly horrible at their supposed niches (sports and news, respectively).
I think the problem is that Adam is (secretly?) a smart guy, and he needs to be paired with someone a little more cerebral than Damashek or Perry. Obviously, he peaked with Dr. Drew, but even Kathy Griffin yesterday was an improvement over his co-hosts.
I think it’ll improve, and I think it’ll last. With Carolla at the helm, it’s still a cut above most local morning zoos.
