Do these ads autoplay? That is, as soon as the page renders the sound starts? Or is it a case of you mouse over or touch the ads in any way and then the sounds starts?
Autoplay is not supposed to happen; however, some ads may have sound but they have to be touched to be activated.
Absolutely was auto play. As soon as the page opened. Happened four times in different forums then seemed to stop.

I’ll pass this information on. They’re not supposed to autoplay, that’s my understanding.
I had a couple autoplay about an hour ago. I opened pages in new tabs, so no chance I mouse overed. No further info here, I had to shut down the pages quickly so as not to annoy those who were working.

Apparently I’m still getting them as well. I thought not, but turns out I had my volume muted yesterday and this morning.

i just got a Spanish canned beverage video with audio, in the spot between messages 1 and 2 in Great Debates. i did not mouse over because i clicked on ‘first unread message’ arrow from that subforum subject page, it started when that thread page opened and i was at the first new message. northern USA.

I’m getting them too in GQ. One for Dove Moisturizing something and one for Monday Night Football.
Equally annoying is the fact (on my PC at least) that the first video that plays will have no volume control, mute control or pause button. It just plays so that God and everyone can hear it.
(Yes, I have a mute button on my PC. I just don’t like to have to use it.)
I just now opened the BBQ Pit forum and an ad-video at the bottom of the page, with audio in Spanish, for Eggo waffles played. Don’t know how to do a screenshot.
Another ad then played in the same window, but without audio.
Ad serving got moved around when we changed owners. Autoplay sound was supposed to be set for “off.” I’ll inquire and see if a switch got inadvertently flipped.
I confirmed with the Sun-Times that we’re not supposed to be getting ads with autoplay sound. Presumably this is a quality control issue with whatever network is responsible for Spanish-language ads. We’ll file a beef with our provider. I’ve collected and will submit the names of offending ads reported so far. In future reports, please provide the following:
Advertiser name and product
Language heard (I gather in most, maybe all cases it’s Spanish)
Did you see this on (a) the SDMB or (b) the Straight Dope column archive? If the SDMB, it’s not necessary to specify the forum or thread.
If possible, send a screen capture (a PNG with the Windows 7 snip tool is ideal) of the offending ad to tubadiva at straightdope dot com. Include enough of the surrounding context to confirm it was an SDMB or column archive page.

I see my thread got merged with this one. I will say that of the ads I have seen/heard a couple have been in Spanish but most in English. I will attempt to get a screen shot but I’ve never done that before.
