Recently, in this thread, Johnny L.A. and vandal commented that they prefered “overcast, cold and rainy” weather over warm, sunny weather. This is a concept that is very hard for me to grasp. I was born in San Diego, so maybe it’s in my genes or something, but I live for warm, sunny days. When I lived in Seattle, the “excuse” was, “How can you appreciate the warm, sunny days if you don’t have anything to compare it to?” Please!!! I remember being a kid in SD and waking up almost every morning, thinking, “God! What a beautiful, warm, deliciously sunny day! Thank god I live here where it is almost always perfect!”
And yet, I have run across this more than once. OpalCat has also conveyed her dislike of warm, sunny weather before. I even started a doomed thread a long time ago that related to this topic in which it seemed most of the people hated the sun as well.
I guess I’m a sun-baby. What do you fine people think? Would you rather have sunshine, heat, etc… Or would you prefer overcast, cold, cloudy, rainy, shitty(Whoops! Had to get a dig in there. :D), weather?
Gimme my snow. If I can’t have snow, I would ask for rain. If it has to be sunny, I would prefer it to be mostly sunny, with a smattering of cirrus stratus clouds, and about 75 degrees with a light breeze.
Right after I hit the submit button, I realized this is more of an IMHO topic. (Even though I don’t read that damn forum!) Oh well, so be it. Mods, do what thou wilt!
Well, I’ll get my response in before this thread gets taken away to the wasteland that is IMHO.
I prefer warm, sunny weather. I hate snow. I hate everything about snow. I’ve tried to like it, I’ve done it all, sled riding, ice-skating, snowball fights, snowmen, snow-angels. whatever. nothing can make my toes feeling like they are gonna freeze off my feet fun, not even snow forts.
I hate rain, I hate the icky soggy wet feeling of a rainy day. I hate cold rainy days where your bones ache even more.
Give me the beach. give me the blazing sun.
I’ll deal with humidity over frostbite anyday.
Ahhh, I think I’m gonna go lay outside for awhile.
My focus is starry nights. As for daytime, I guess I prefer cool autumn weather (a real New Englander here). Unlike psycat90, I like snow…except for driving in it which is the pits. I don’t think I’ll like the summer heat until I get air conditioning in my house.
(aside) Recently I saw the Temptations in concert and heard for the first time their wonderful song “Let it Rain.” Could you believe I had never heard it before? A true gem of Motown craft. I ran out and bought a CD containing that tune.
Since you’re polling the Teeming Millions, I’ll surprise you by saying that I would side more with Johnny LA than with you. I don’t mind the sunshine so much, but I hate hot weather. On days like this with 28°C weather I’m miserable. And I get a sunburn easily. Last week I was outdoors most of the morning and neglected to put on suntan, and I was in pain the next day!
A big part of this too is that with the advent of air-conditioned offices, very prevalent in California, my body is very used to always being cool (I work indoors.) Then I leave work and get in my air-conditioned car to drive to my shady home. So in the summer, when I do physical activities like hiking or bike-riding on the week-ends, the heat hits me like a furnace. Ironically enough, I think that I could support the hot summers in Switzerland more easily, because even if the temperature reached levels as they do in the USA, due to the lesser prevalence of air-conditioning, the shock was not as brutal when you went outside. Many of my friends from Europe have commented how the temperature of air-conditioned buildings in the USA is much lower than the temperature of buildings in Europe on hot days.
I think a nice refreshing rain is a welcome change to a series of hot days. And that in my mind is the real issue, change! My parents who live in Switzerland love coming to visit because they know it will always be sunny (I live in Southern California.) I love going back to Switzerland on vacation because I know I’ll see some rain, snow and/or thunderstorms.
Ohio weather is so gay, we get all the extremes, cold freezing nights, and hot frying days. The snow is so dreary, let me bask in the sun and work on my tan with sweat beading on my skin anyday.
I like bright, clear crisp and cold sunny days. I dislike getting too hot, or it being too humid and I thrive in air conditioning. During the summer I lurk inside most of the time, but in the winter I go out and do a lot of things. It doesn’t snow here and the winters are not as cool as they used to be, but the humidity is down, the average temperature drops from 90 to around 70 and the nights are pleasantly cold. I even shut off my A/C for the night and poke a fan in the window to bring in the good cold air.
In mid summer, in the afternoon, my plants wilt and working for just a few minutes in my vegetable garden covers me with sweat. When it gets slightly over cast, the humidity level soars and even walking outside can leave one feeling ‘moist.’ The only time I like over cast days in the summer is for rain as a relief from the heat. Even then, afterwards, things are worse as the sun causes the ground to steam.
No, give me clear, cool, bright winter days please. Just cold enough to have to wear long sleeves or a light jacket. There is something about a winter sky that I like. It seems so much bluer than in the summer. In the summer here, it seems to be grayish blue. A burnt blue.
Hmm, well i cant wait to hear your opinions on California winters ;). I hope you knew this, but we get rain in winter here. Fortunately, it’s usually only in late November to April or so. But fortunately it’s never really that cold when it rains.
But as for me,I like a bit of variety. I dont like blazing hot summers where it’s in the 90’s to 100’s every day. So far it’s been pleasant this summer, some foggy days, but then we’ve had some really nice warm sunny ones too. I generally like it best when its sunny with some clouds, and the temps are in the mid to upper 70s.
If I had to pick i’d take an entire year of sun and warm weather over one that was continually cloudy, wet, and cold.
And actually, i’d love to live in the tropics, IF I had my house on the beach.
In San Diego, sunny summer days can be pleasant as well as gorgeous. I grew up in Louisiana, though. Sunny summer days mean ridiculous temperatures, humidity hovering near 100%, and afternoon thunderstorms that appear out of nowhere and blow things up. Besides, I’m peculiarly light sensitive, and unfiltered summer sunshine hurts my eyes. Cool, clear winter days are another matter–those I like. I’m also fond of cool, foggy mornings.
I had to go to northern Greenland (700 miles north of the Arctic Circle) last fall. I can now say with great authority: Snow sucks. I don’t mind the cold, but getting anywhere through the stuff is a nightmare. I’ve never yet had to shovel heat off a driveway.
I don’t mind rain, although its not my favorite weather. (Hey, you live in Oregon, you learn to deal).
The thing that drives me crazy about weather here is that it is so random. It could be sunny, warm, and no clouds, ten minutes later… hard rain. Drives me nuts, here I am in shorts and soaking wet. Ugh…
I love thunderstorms, they’re fun. Snow is great, except I always have to work/drive in it. Which sucks.
And as a former Californian… gotta love warm, sunny days.
Rain is okay. But what I really dig is a good, stiff wind. With thunderheads in the distance, and the gentle rumble of an approaching storm.
People ask me why I hate the beach, and I have to explain the I really love the beach…on a gray November day, with a long greatcoat whipping around my shins and a bottle of cheap Burgundy in the pocket.
I love it when it gets windy. I like watching my plum tree whip around in the wind, seeing papers and cans blow about, and seing the sand fromt he sand dunes drift across the highway. It’s even more fun to see if some of the dead pines are going to fall, or see tourists in shorts being blown about
I hate the sun. It is my lifelong aspiration to put out the sun and cause the earth to be blanketed in darkness and shadow forever! I’m a very nocturnal sort of furry, and when I have to be out and about in the daytime, I hate hot weather. (Like has been occuring this last week.) If the damned sun has to be out, it had best be no warmer than 70 degrees, and with a nice breeze, and with some clouds in the sky.
I don’t mind sunny days… going to the lake and swimming around for hours on end in the cool water then icecream and a picnic lunch or something cooked over a fire (like grilled sandwiches or hotdogs) I love rainy days too though its just when too many are stringed together that I get tired of them. Its always nice to have a cool rain after a hot day.
laughs I’m sorry but the idea of that being winter is totally foreign to me… thats more like autumn here. Usually we get knee high snow up to -40C weather. I remember one day in grade 5 or so… about 7 years ago I didn’t go to school cuz it was that cold out. (The school was behind us just over the hill maybe a hundred meter walk) That also happened to be the night of the Christmas concert. We ended up getting bundled up to our eyes to walk 100 meters then when we arrived inside we went to the bathroom to change into our good clothes. (They don’t exactly fit well under snowsuits) After the concert we changed back to trudge back home.
But then I’m in Alberta Canada and I bet you’ve heard lots about our winters. You know… the dog sleds… wolves coming out and attacking familys cuz their so hungry… eating blubber… grins
I was born and raised in San Diego county, and while snow is a charming novelty, I would actively avoid having to live anywhere where it snows on a regular basis. My body and mind are attuned to this climate, and I LOVE IT!
