Did I mention I love it? I really do! After 16 years of working full time, I have finally found a job that “fits” me - probably only the second job I’ve ever felt this way about, and the first one was 14 years ago.
No dealing with the public? Check.
No dealing with front counter? Check.
No dealing with telephones? Check.
Making more money than I ever expected? Check.
Working with a great team? Check.
Working for a top 100 organization? Check.
Working one block from my husband? Check.
Learning every day? Check.
The only downside - because I’m new, I don’t get any paid holiday time in my first year, which BITES … but other than that, I am a happy happy camper!
I could have writen this about my current job as well. I work behind locked doors that only the people who work in my office have the code for. There are only about 3 groups of people that can call me. I more than tripled my pay from 6 months ago. My co-workers are smart, and laid back. My wife works directly upstairs. There is always some small project that needs to be done, but no hurry so I can take my time and learn how to do it well.
The only downside for me is I am working in Kyrgyzstan, and while it isn’t that bad it isn’t the US. I don’t speak Kyrgz, or Russian. My language skills suck, and learning a new language has never worked for me.
I work for an organization that has very high and strict standards for every document it produces. So all of the documents are supposed to go to our department. Then I, and the other members of my team, proof, edit and format all of the documents (letters, minutes, reports, recommendations, agendas, posters, brochures, guides, spreadsheets, you name it).
My skills are primarily clerical, so my last few jobs have been front-line - namely switchboard and front desk reception. I hate interruptions and love challenges and deadlines. So my new job, while others might find it boring, is a perfect fit for me.
Because our department and its skills are highly valued within the organization, the pay grade is higher by far than anything I’ve ever experienced. I work with people who take their work as seriously as I do, but don’t take themselves seriously at all, which is a fantastic combination for an anal goofball like me!
Just wanted to say Congratulations! And thanks for the update! I remember when you were sweating the interview process; sometimes it’s nice to know it all works out.
I just got back to temping (been laid off for about a year) and even better than the fact that this could go permanent, I also LOVE LOVE LOVE this job! I had one six week temp job back in February and part of March and I HATED it! The drive was an hour, the people had NOTHING for me to do, and they were mean. This place is 180 degrees different - I LOVE it here.
It feels good, doesn’t it, to WANT to go to work in the morning?
