So I accepted a new job last weekend and put in notice this week. I’m going from my once safe and stable job (I say “once” because our company was purchased not too long ago and the department’s fate is questionable) to one with a company that’s less than a year old. I’m 1/3 of the staff at my new job. It’s a bit risky, but…I’m counting down the days till I start.
See, I’ve never had a job I actually looked forward to doing. But this one, I couldn’t stop smiling the day I got the offer. I’ll be working for people I like, in a place I like to go, doing things I’m good at. I won’t feel like I’m being sucked dry every time I go there.
Yep, pretty mundane and pointless, but I just wanted to share my happiness. All of you Dopers who are unhappy in your jobs or looking for something new–have hope! The perfect thing could be out there just waiting for you to find it.
I just took a job that I love that allows me to work from home (transcription) and jumped off the hamster wheel of commuting, back breaking work, and BS. I couldn’t be happier and I think I’ll actually make a bit more money, although no bennies.
I did that once! It was tons of fun. I went from IBM to temping at United Airlines to a small family-owned company that created a teeny-tiny .com start-up. Good luck and have fun!!
Congrats, moonstarssun! I recently accepted a new job with less aggravation, and I’m much, much happier. Never underestimate how important it is to enjoy what you do for a living.

Congrats! There’s nothing like enjoying your work. I do what BoBettie just started doing, only I’ve been doing it for over 20 years now, and I’m still not tired of it, so apparently it’s the right match for me. I love the flexibility and sense of freedom I have, plus of course there’s the fact that I’m darned good at it. But happiness at your work can make up for a lot, so here’s hoping a few months down the road you feel the same way you do now!
Thanks everyone! I’m so glad to hear from others that making a big change like this has been a positive step. I’m excited about it, but naturally a little worried about the financial changes. Hearing that you’ve had good experiences eases my mind about that part of it.
Work is such a big part of our lives, it’s great when you have one you enjoy. When I hear people say “bah, after all, we all work for money” I like to respond “yeah, but what’s the point if you don’t have the time and energy to spend it”.
