I love pistachios, don't you?

I must have them unshelled. The shells…they keep me from the nut!! Arrrggghhhh!!!

Hi everyone, my name is Teacake and I am a pistachio lover. They make a wonderful curry sauce with lamb, mutton or goat. Also, piri piri pistachios ground to butter and spread on toast - yum.

That’s what the nail file/screwdriver on your swiss army knife is for - to pry them open from the smallest crack.

You do have a swiss army knife, right? :dubious:

Oh, and many years ago when I was into making ice cream, one of my experimental flavors was Pistachio Banana.

I do.
I once convinced three younger cousins that “pistachio” was an Italian word that meant “tiny little bird brain” (The shells do have a skully look about them.) and they were gourmet and only for adults and that’s why they couldn’t have any. (And also that’s why they’re green—they’re allowed to rot for a little to make them better tasting.)

Of course, they immediately were saying “Oh GROSS! That’s so GROSS!!! Can I have one?” “I want one too!” “If she get’s one, I get one!”

Me: (the kindly older cousin/aunt) “Okay, everyone can have one. Just one!”

Watching two 8yr old girls and one five yr old girl cracking the ‘skulls’ to get to the ‘brain’ and trying to be cool while they are eating a NUT while they think they’re eating brains…sorry, that’s funny as hell.

If they weren’t so expensive, I’d eat them till by thumb and forefinger were bloody! And I save the shells for use in an abrasive tumbler/polisher… that I will someday get around to buying.

Any recipes? I have eaten and enjoyed pistachio pudding, but there’s got to be more.

I buy pistachios only in Nov and Dec. They are fresher then. By Jan the packages are getting a bit stale and often marked down in price. I don’t see them in Kroger after Feb or March.

Just as well. My waistline doesn’t need nuts year around.

Thanks very much. I appreciate your taking the time to give me your advice.

I’ve decided this is one occasion of many where it will be best for me to just shut up.

Thanks again.

Hopelessly addicted. I am powerless. I get some every Christmas, sometimes the already shelled ones. Never got around to making anything with them because I et em all.

And…and…pistachios in Turkey are even better! A little smaller and more intensely flavored than the California ones. And everywhere! In a zillion pastries.
Fish or chicken or steak coated in crushed pistachios before cooking is awesomely full of win.
Pistachio ice cream consumed in bed between bouts of sex makes all orgasms, both before and after, more intense.

Marlon Brando voice, screaming up at the balcony of the apartment where the nuts are

PISTACHIO!!!

If you have shelled pistachios, they taste even better slightly toasted.,

Love em. Martha Stewart has a recipe for pistachio cake with buttercream and pistachio praline. It takes two days to make but oh my! And I got a recipe in Gourmet a couple of years ago that I make for Xmas…a nice dried cranberry/pistachio shortbread cookie that looks all festive with red and green. Yum! I’d post links but I am relatively new here and don’t think I can…

I love them and are glad they don’t come died red like they used to (what was that about?)

as a new member, does the society have dues? and if we do, when are the dues due, Dude?

While I adore pistachios, and they tend to be the most common nut found chez aru [with almonds coming in second] my absolute favorite is macadamia, which are too expensive and have way too many calories for me for frequent noshings upon.

One of my classmates was Turkish, and whenever he came back from a visit, he would always bring a whole suitcase full of baklava. The really good kind-- He was never one to skimp. Everyone would always find an excuse to stop by the office whenever word got out that Mehmet had left a box of baklava to share.

And has nobody mentioned their texture? They’re nicely firm, but not hard.

This is my place, and these are my people!

That sounds wonderful. Got a recipe?

Yum! Yum! Yum! I loves me some pistachios! I has to stop taking them to work, though. I was going through way too many and that wasn’t good for my waistline or wallet!
