Lets take my second quote (I’m too lazy to look up who in this thread said it).
I’d hate to be your children if you can’t see how wrong this is. I mean, when I was a Little Bastard ™ I got called on when I said or did something wrong regardless of where I picked it up from.
If you don’t call out your kids when they say “bad” words like nigger and chink, it equates to being ok with it. Am I getting through to you Ferrous and Diane? Being a kid isn’t a defense for being a racist, or a murderer, or a rapist. I guess you could blame the parents but regardless of who’s to blame, you still shows the kid it’s ok unless you correct them.
Why is this so hard to believe? I mean, if your dog shits on the carpet don’t you immediately correct them? If you didn’t, you’re telling your dog it’s ok to shit on your carpet. Humans are the same. If you watch your kids cross the road without looking, wouldn’t you want to correct them ASAP so they don’t get killed the next time they do it?
Holy fuck people, it ain’t rocket science. I mean, most people here are saying Madawc went over board by hurting the kid but we shouldn’t make excuses of the fact that the kid made racial comments. By saying that Madawc was even wrong for confronting the kid (now I need to go back into the thread, gah!) is saying we should just accept that racists are racists?
There, Delly made a fly-by comment. Creative_Munster (who I took my first quote from) ties into this as well (just a word, yeah, so is “fat”). Since I’m doing a quick reply I cannot see the first page but I’m sure there are posts there that display this sort of “don’t worry about it, they’re being kids” sort of shit I see every day.
I understand when parents are pissed over the fact that Madawc shouldn’t have touched the kid but he was right in showing that using such language is unacceptable.

Fucking rats, I mean hamsters fucked up my followup post.
Good thing I like to copy stuff when I post here:
Oh, I see what you’re getting at. When I put things in quotes " " I’m not quoting someone directly. I’m using them in place of ( ) since I like to use brackets for making extra comments (like this).
Sorry for the confusion. No, no one on this board said:
But I can infer from some posters that this is infact what they want to tell themselves.
I don’t believe anyone, kids or not, should be excused for anti-social behavours. They should be taught that it’s not acceptable and not excused away as “oh, it’s ok, they’re old (or young)” (and the quotes again, not using them to quote anyone directly).
When I quote people I use the quote function.
And Ferrous, again, see the part about the quotes. I was trying not to be specific to you or Diane about your kids (because I’m pretty sure from Diane’s post she wouldn’t be ok if her kids said these kinds of words). But from other posters I get the feeling that “live and let live” apathy exists.
WOW, way to drift into left field (and you have the balls to say we don’t comprehend). Who in the KEEEEEEEEEEEEEERIST said we wouldn’t call out our kids if they said “bad” words? Please quote something that actually proves your point.
I am still waiting for you to quote evidence that anyone here has said it is okay to call someone a chink.
Just some friendly advice. Read the words as they are presented, not how you interpret them. Also, don’t make snarky remarks about first languages when in fact it was you who did read the words as they were presented.
Badman - Read the responses again. Although I do sympathize with the OP somewhat, neither Diane nor Ferrous claimed that the kids’ behavior should be condoned. In fact, Ferrous agreed that a good scare would be a good idea, but the OP went to far, and Diane even said that she’d be okay with you “yelling from afar to shut the fuck up,” but that the disciplinary duties should be left to her discretion.
By the way, your apparent mind-reading prowess (“But I can infer from posters…”) is generally not a good rhetorical technique, especially around here.
All my quotes (the correctly quoted ones) were not taken out of context. Most of them are almost complete quotes by the poster.
I did not quote the first part because no one outright said it. Again, I felt people were defending the kids for using the work “chink” and you know what? From the real quotes I took, I can consider myself right. There are plenty of people using the ‘they’re just kids’ line. I’m not going to bother to requote myself. I didn’t infer that part. I am using my “mind reading” (thanks pulykarmell) skills on the next logical thought to “they’re just kids” which is 'they’re just kids being kids and shouldn’t be faulted for being racist" (yes, no one said this exact line).
I didn’t mean to call into question either of your child rearing skills. I took exception to all the (real) quotes I provided and I think I crossed someone’s post/thoughts. Sorry about that.
But I stand by my original thoughts on the matter.
My point was that the child is 12 years old. Maybe it was a Racist attack or maybe it wasnt? Im going to assume the child didnt know any better. Madawc should have gone to the childs parents. Not attack the child in the street.
When I said just leave it go, I meant in this case, as its a child. If it were an adult then by all means go back and talk it over, but you dont scream at a child in the street over something you may or may not have heard.
Madawc, last time I checked there were individual Sports out there, you dont necessarily have tp play as part of a team.
Feistymongol was a pugnacious Asian American who saw racists in every corner and used the SDMB to boast of his (supposedly) violent responses to same–including veiled threats against other posters.
Assuming that Madawc and Feisty aren’t the same person, I have to ask . . . why do some Asian American males feel a need to boast of what violent badasses they are in the face of (questionable) racism? At least two in the past six months. African Americans and Hispanics probably encounter in one week more racism than an Asian American runs across in a whole decade, so why all the sound and fury, signifying nothing?
[Shrek]Do ya think he’s, ah, compensatin’ for somthing?[/Shrek]
I don’t think anyone is saying that the kid is not an asshole. I can’t speak for the others, but my take on it is that the kid may be racist, but just the use of “chink” does not make him one. Some kids like to get people’s goat, and will use any trigger they can to get that goat. “Chink” was a very effective trigger against madawc, and “nigger” would probably be a very effective trigger against most blacks (though the kid may know enough not to use it). The kid wanted to get a reaction from someone (his friends for thinking he’s cool with his insult capability, or the target, to show that he’s cool for being able to get his goat), but this reaction probably went far beyond what he wanted, and he will probably be more careful in the future. However, in this case, he will be more careful because of fear, and not because he understands that he really hurt Madawc. That is where the real shame is.
Of course, the kid could really be a racist, but I doubt it. As I said before, we used all sorts of nasty words in late elementary and middle school, but most of us grew out of it. So yes, the kid is most certainly at fault, but I would by default call him a foul-mouthed brat instead of a racist, unless there was further evidence to the contrary…
