I stand here & write this with aching limbs, on no sleep. I think I know why supposedly loving wives happily send their severely sleep-apnea’d (or possibly, apneoid, signifying some terrifyingly insidious non-human derivative) husbands out on camping trips in close proximity to other campers. Its either the longing for a good nights sleep or the infliction of mutual cruelty upon as large a social group as possible in the hopes of an acquittal at a later date.
I’d debate this further but I’m in dire need of shower & sleep…and about the order? Quite honestly, my dear, I don’t give a damn.
PS- Cellphones shouldn’t run on watch batteries any more than Dinalis should run on lawn-mower engines…
I understand the thought, but at about 10 hours you will be ready for another trip. You can only pack so many hours into one session. The lights and noises will get to you. If not that, then just the force of habit will shorten that 16 hours. Then too, you will need to catch up on household chores.
I’m an insomniac - I fall asleep OK but wake really early, and if I’m stressed out I wake really really early. But one time I was profoundly jetlagged and hungover coming back from a business trip in the States. When I got home I went to bed at 5pm and woke up again at 8am. 15 hours straight. It’s the longest I’ve ever slept, and the next day I felt absolutely amazing. Like “aha, this is what normal people feel like”.
When I was working in Tokyo, I worked really late 12-16 hour days on thursdays. One time I was so exhasted I went to sleep early friday night and got up sunday morning.
Back in the early 90’s on a trip to the BWCA, we had a sleet storm that just overwhelmed our gear. By the time we camped, I was so wiped out from hypothermia that I slept for 16 hours straight.
I am a very light sleeper and don’t sleep long or easy. Every single time I have gone to the BWCA, by the time we have surrendered our gear after coming back out, the “tired” starts to overwhelm me and I basically sleep the entire trip home (cannot sleep in a car any other time, but can’t stay awake after all that) and then when I get home I sleep long and hard.
Kinda have the same thing on regular camping trips. There’s always some jackasses up until 3-4am making all kinds of noise and throwing their empties into the pile of other empties, constantly waking me up. Then once they finally pass out drunk or get to sleep, there’s always some goddamned early bird who wants to get up at 6am and start chopping wood and banging pans to get the day started. I enjoy camping, but when I consider things like this, I’m kinda happy I haven’t gone in a while.
