I might be spending Christmas in Cleveland (Ohio).

So does it always snow there around that time of year? I’ve never had a white christmas in my life. Anything spectacular to see around C-town around Christmas? It’s not set yet as I’m not sure about finances, if i could get a direct flight there’d be no issue but cost of flying to NYC or Chicago and then on to Cleveland can be alot.

Weather around Great Lakes cities can, indeed, be very intense during the winter, so your chances of snow are pretty good.

We’ve had some non-white Christmases as of late. Pisses me right off :frowning: Seems like we don’t get the good stuff until after the first of the year anymore.

Uhm…there’s lots of cool stuff in Cleveland for Christmas. There’s a tree lighting downtown and a skating rink and stuff. Akron has a nice Christmas spread, too.

If you can work it into your schedule, go see the Great Lakes Theater Festival’s production of “A Christmas Carol.” Wonderful acting and amazing stage effects!

Likely dates would be 19th or 20th of Dec through to January 7th/8th or 9th.

Most of the snow falls on the eastside (I should know I lived there as a kid)-lake effect dontcha know.

You could visit the house from the movie “A Christmas Story”

What’s “A Christmas Story”?
My Missus lives in Berea so I think that makes me an honorary Westsidah. :stuck_out_tongue:

It’s a 1983 holiday comedy movie, very well-known here, and shown on TV every year around Christmas.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen it. I’ve seen Santa Claus, The Movie though. That’s the first movie I ever remember seeing.

It will snow, but Cleveland actually has a decent snow removal service, so unless it snows like it did 2 or 3 years ago, you should be fine.

Have you ever driven in the snow?

A Christmas Story is a classic. Ask your lady friend if you can watch it while you’re here… trust me, it will be on TV.

As for what to do in Cleveland around that time? Well, I’ve heard that…

“On the windy banks of the Cuyahoga
On the windy banks of that firey river
There’s a firey girl who won’t let [you] go”

Also, bring your coat, hat, mittens, and galoshes. Like ZipperJJ said, it will probably be warm and sunny or some shit, but it could just as likely be a freakin’ blizzard as well.

Look me up, I’ll buy you a pint.

ETA: Per the above post - If you haven’t had experience driving in the snow, please only try in a parking lot or something. We don’t need you spinning around in circles in the middle of Cleveland traffic.

You could go see the Cleveland Cavaliers (with LeBron James) play the Miami Heat on Christmas Day.

You can’t count on there being snow, chances are there will be snow, and you may experience a blizzard or ice storm. You may wish to tour at night and see the Christmas lights. I don’t know if you get such huge displays.

A Christmas Story is a movie about life as a kid in a small Midwest community. It brings back humorous childhood memories for many adults. You may not find it funny, or you may.

I can’t drive, my missus is also my chauffeur lol.

Stinkyburrito, that’s kinda scary getting my own lyrics quoted back at me!

Harmonious Discord, those displays are getting more common here but generally such displays here are poor cousins to American ones. The leccy bills must be insane come January  .

The electric bills have to be much higher for those large displays. Most people don’t have those large displays. There are enough people that do however, to insure that you will see them when you drive around at Christmas.

A Christmas story isn’t your typical Santa/Jesus propaganda film. It is about a family in the 1940’s technically set in Indiana I believe but a house in Ohio is close enough. The older son, Ralphie desperately wants a BB gun for Christmas like many of us did. Specifically, he wants a “an official Red Ryder, carbine action, two-hundred shot range model air rifle, with a compass in the stock and ‘this thing’ which tells time”. Other very nice things are introduced in the movie like a lamp shaped like a female leg, hound dogs, the F-bomb as it relates to juvenile behavior, taste comparisions of different soaps, and what happens when you don’t listen to your parents and teachers.

It is the only movie I can think of that just appeared as an established tradtion and instant classic. I don’t even remember it being in theaters although it must have been. It just appeared on the holliday TV lineup in the 80’s and has stayed there ever since. It is a good movie and a nice bit of Americana so watch it if you can.

I can offer you no helpful advice. Only my sympathy.

I just moved to the Westside!

The weather can be either warmish or blizzard. Last year Christmas day was like a nice spring morning and around Easter we had 2 feet of snow. For a real adventure I’ll let you shovel my driveway.

If you get homesick, we’ve only got about 300 Irish pubs and saloons around these parts. First pint of Smithwick’s is on me. I’ll regail you with stories of my adventures at the Bunratty Folk Park in Limerick.

If you come early we’re planning on a Halloween Dopefest.

Start another thread when you’re in town and we’ll get together. My email address is in my profile.

I wouldn’t count on a “white” xmas in Cleveland. If anything, a snowfall paired with snow removal efforts would lead to a dirty grey xmas. I’ve had my share of Pittsburgh grey xmases.
