Seems like only yesterday.
Huh?
What’s the appeal?
(for those interested, it’s an old thread with an opening shot, slagging some poster, then people pulling up chairs for the coming train wreck.)
Was it the conflict? Or the amused onlookers on chairs eating popcorn, 'cause I’m not seeing it, to be honest. Do tell!
Agreed. I first lurked the SDMB around the time of the thread, but I don’t know this Esprix person. Maybe it’s a pit thing - they have their own whole “THING,” unrelated to the rest of the board…
Joe
You’re not missing anything.
I liked it better to when people took that stuff directly to the pit instead of interruping other threads (Here’s a current example, Do affairs usually end in regret and remorse?, see post #6).
Maybe the MMPs took over the popcorn parties in the pit?
Reading that thread reminded me of how tiresome and annoying those endless “pulling up a lawn chair” comments would be.
:Pops his popcorn, hurr durr!:
Joe
Actually those can be the favorite Pit Posts for me; especially when a thread gets moved there and those who have posted in that thread have some fun about it. “So this is the Pit, huh? Funny - I thought it would be darker and smaller.”
Absolutely. It’s a good reminder as to why they were eventually banned.
I’m a little torn about the thread in question. It’s the kind of thing I used to really enjoy back then. Maybe not that particular thread, since Esprix wasn’t ever one who really made it onto my radar, but there were other examples that I thought were a lot of fun. But now, rereading it, it seems kind of childish to me. I think if that thread were going on now, I’d probably roll my eyes and ignore it.
Can it be?
Surely not.
I desperately hope not.
Could it truly be that I’ve…matured?
I find it interesting only in that** AM/PM** is a paid-up member who hasn’t posted in almost nine years. (Last Activity: 11-25-2001 12:46 PM)
How many others like that are there here?
I have noticed that there’s hardly any flamboyant homosexuals like **Esprix **on the SDMB these days. Passionate and vocal gay posters still frequent this place, but they don’t toss their e-text feather boas like the old stage queens used to do. Sampiro’s a good example. He orates, gesticulates and pontificates, but he doesn’t do show tunes and arias.
Wow. I didn’t notice that.
I found it amusing, especially some of the stuff Fenris posted.
I have to be close…
I’ve been here since 1/00 and have only 234 posts. That’s 0.0663829787234043 posts per day. Roughly. But I’m here almost every day. I love you guys, I guess…
:: Pulls out some old-school colon usage for old time’s sake ::
Awesome…thanks.
I haven’t had anything to say.
But I’m here every day!
I read most of the linked thread and I’m baffled as to why this Esprix character was held in such high esteem. His eventual response fell far short of spectacular, yet everyone continued to stroke his testicles endlessly.
And the double-colon pulling up a lawn chair bullshit almost made me lose the feta cheese omelette I had just enjoyed.
mmm
It was just a different time on the SDMB. Different customs, different local folk heros, different cast of characters. Sure, some of it makes us cringe now, but I find it fascinating to look back at our archives. It’s like an archeological dig.
Esprix started the “Ask the…” tradition on the SDMB, with his “Ask the Gay Guy” threads. A witty and engaging fellow, and someone who inspired wit and engagement in others.
ISTM that the SDMB was more playful and less personally nasty back in the day. Nostalgia is a bitch sometimes.
