I agree. I don’t like it when works set in the future refer to things we have today (like prostitutes) with a needlessly futuristic neologism. Just call 'em hookers. Courtesans if they’ve got pretensions to class. Whores if you’re being mean. Your characters, I assume, are either speaking English or another language that you’re writing as English. So have them use the English terms.
Besides that, try borrowing words from other languanges, or turning a common word into a euphemism. Like “companion”. Or “escort”. Besides Compainion (which, it should be pointed out, referred to a specific high-class kind of prostitute, they still had plain old whores as well), Firefly also coined the term “sly” for “gay”, which I like so much that if I were braver I’d try to introduce it to real use.

In the episode “Heart of Gold”, the crew is protecting a brothel. The Madam offers Mal his choice of female prostitutes. When he declines she says something like “we also have men if you are sly”.
