My dad wants to learn how to speak Gaelic (Irish Gaelic, specifically) and has recently bought a book on how to learn it. Well, as expected, it’s kind of hard to learn a language without any audio lessons.
So I’m looking for a good “How to learn Gaelic” audiotape - even an audiotape/cd of a book on the same subject.
Is there anything that anyone here could suggest? Perhaps a website that has some good choices? I looked on Amazon and found one or two things, but I thought I’d check here to see if anyone has any better suggestions.
Here’s kind of a crap suggestion – I remember when reading the Outlandish Companion that the author, Diana Gabaldon, said that she receives thousands of requests for help learning Gaelic. I believe that she offered suggestions in the book. You might check it out of the local library and look at that section.
I’d like to point out that if you go looking for a book on “Gaelic” you’re more likely to find the Scottish variety. Irish Gaelic is generally referred to simply as “Irish”.
The consensus on the Gaeilge-B (Irish learners) mailing list seems to be in favour of Learning Irish by Mícheál Ó Siadhail. It shouldn’t be difficult to find at the larger bookstores Stateside.
