I need help before I shave my head in defeat...(hair woes)

This is a stupid hair care thread, but I need help.

I just moved to Washington, and my hair isn’t use to the climate. I don’t know how to control it. I’ve always been in bone-dry climates, and all I ever needed to do was the usual shampoo and conditioning, with blowdrying.

Now my hair is a giant poofball. I don’t know what to use to tame it down, because I’ve never needed to.

It’s vanity, but I’m going to be looking for jobs and going into interviews, and I would feel much better about myself if my hair didn’t double the size of my head…plus, I’m sick of ponytails. It’s like all there is out there are products that add lift, increase volume and give the illusion of thickness. Exactly what I don’t need.

AfterAugust hair facts:

  • I have tons of hair, and its very thick.
  • It sucks up moisture like a sponge.
  • I have too much volume.
  • I have natural waves, but they’re uneven and I would like my hair to just be straight.
  • Hair frizzes VERY easily.

If anyone can tell me what sort of hair products to get, or whatever other techniques are out there, it would be greatly appreciated.

Here is a site that will teach you how to blow-dry your hair so that you’re forcing it to go straight. I also get vicious frizzies (Oo! Band name!) and have an annoying natural wave otherwise. I can now get my hair as stright as the top pic and there are no frizzies.

Otherwise I use hair gel and do not use the blow dryer. If you aren’t blow drying it straight as in the link above, you’ve likely find that the blow dryer ads a helluva lot more volume. I’d just use gel let it dry in place (which would give me the “wet look”) then tussel my hair once it was thorougly air dry which would then make it look normal.

Yep, what Eats_Crayons says. Maybe some pomade, just a bit on your hands, lightly over your hair to de-frizz. I do it when my hair is wet and then maybe a little when I’m done blow drying. Best thing is to gel and air dry as has been suggested, though.

I have embraced my Bad Hair.

Since I was a child, my head has always looked like a sloppily constructed bird’s nest. My hair is always a mess. It’s almost a trademark for me.

It’s really my fault. I can’t blame nature too much. To tell you the truth, I just don’t feel like messing with it. I keep it cut relatively short, so all I have to do is run a brush through it in the morning. I’d much rather just quickly brush it, and then spend the extra few minutes reading in the morning, rather than trying to force it to obey me. It’s one of those unsolvable problems: I have Bad Hair, but I don’t want to spend (waste) the time necessary to groom it into being Nice Hair.

My husband went to college with a girl who spent * three hours * every morning styling her hair. I just can’t imagine that. So, I’ve decided to become comfortable in my Bad Hair-ness.

I would like to say that I’m making some sort of anti-vanity statement, or protesting the hair care industry, but, honestly, it’s just a matter of not caring enough. Sure, I’d like to have Nice Hair, but I’d rather spend that time curled up with a cup of tea and a good book.

Embrace your Bad Hair, dear. It makes life so much easier.

There is a product called Frizz-Ease. My friends with hair like yours swear by it.

I’ll trade you for my ton of baby-fine, no body, lifeless limp hair.

Also, there are processing kits sold to straighten African American hair. They are harsh, but they will work on other hair types.

And a good hairdresser can thin your hair without producing the Demented Poodle on Bad Drugs style. MUST be a good hairdresser, though. Ask for help finding one.

I swear by Frizz Ease. When I was living in the South, I applied Frizz Ease Wind Down Relaxing Cream (step 4) to my wet hair and then blow dried with a big round brush. I have so much hair, I would separate it into sections while blow drying to make sure I got it really straight.

My hair sounds really similar to yours…lots of it, natural wave, prone to frizz…so good luck!

I use VO5 hairdressing - yes that stuff in the toothpaste tube that your grandmother used. Just a little tiny bit mushed into my towel-dried hair every morning. It keeps my hair from getting it’s own zipcode and it’s cheap! Happy hair - what a concept!

Use cholesterol by Queen Helene once or twice a week.

To blow dry, use V05 straightening balm, can’t remember the exact name but it’s all over the place now. I swear by it.

Just trim it to a No 2 or No 3.

I went shopping yesterday and found Frizz-ease, but I didn’t get it. I guess I’m not use to spending more than $7 on hair products.
I think I’d feel better if I found something in a bigger container that did the sme thing. Oh well, I think I have to get use to splurging on hair care products. I would just let it be, but it causes me to feel hot and stuffy. Blah, my hair easily transforms into a death blanket.

Very uncomfortable.

Thank you, by the way - great advice, and I will probably give all of it a shot.

with the hair putty which is like mud thicker than pomade and frizz ease you should be okay!
