I need some advice installing a gasket on my front door threshold.

I purchased a threshold similar to this one at Lowe’s. It is aluminum and has a vinyl insert to form the seal between the bottom of the door and the threshold. Unlike the one in the picture, the screws that fasten to threshold to the subfloor are under the vinyl. Therefore, it must be installed without the gasket in place. Then, once installed, the vinyl gasket must be worked into place.

And that’s where the fun begins. I cannot figure out how I am supposed to work one side of the gasket under the lip of the threshold, then work the hook-like shape of the vinyl under the other lip. Does anyone here have some experience in installing this sort of threshold?

I have a sweep gasket on the door, but it just isn’t up to the task. It is going to be below freezing in the next 24-hours and I would like to seal this up. Once the spring comes around, I’m afraid that lizards and other critters will come a-crawling.

Just a guess – does it slide into place?

Yes, it slides into place quite easily. Buuuuuuut, the screws that attach the threshold to the subfloor are under the gasket, so it must be installed without the gasket in place.

The gasket has to be forced in. It helps to warm it to make it more flexible and some soapy water makes it slippery.

Are you sure you’re looking at the correct screw holes?
Because the photo you link to has the screw holes in the aluminum part, above where the vinyl threshold is. That’s the only kind I’ve ever seen. The screws have to be high enough to go into the door itself, with the vinyl below, flexing down to the floor. If the screws were under the vinyl, there would be nothing to screw them into.

The one in the picture is not the exact threshold that I have. The vinyl and associated channel are identical, but the placement of the screw holes is not. On mine, the screws are under the vinyl. The entire device attaches to the floor, not to the door. The aluminum threshold was installed quite easily, but attaching the vinyl insert is nigh impossible.

I’ll try heating it and see if that helps. Thanks.

Put one edge in the slot and use a putty knife as a guide to bend the vinyl to follow. A hair drier might help to warm it as you go this time of year.
