I need some good movies to rent.

School just got let out and I need some good or hilariously bad movies to rent.

First, welcome to the boards, this is officially my first time saying that to anyone since I myself am fairly new.
Second, tell us some of the movies you have liked in the past so we can get an idea of what your tastes are.

Real Genius, Encino Man, Office Space, The Big Lebowski, Old School

Or, alternatively, we could just start spouting movie titles, in which case:

Mystery Science Theater 3000, The Princess Bride, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter (1 and/or 2), A Guy Thing, Equilibrium.

Plus big kudos to jb_007clone for the excellent suggestions.

How about Clerks? Very funny movie, Right next to Office Space in my pantheon of favorites. Or anything else by Kevin Smith. They’re all pretty dang goog.

Super Troopers is another very funny, stupid movie. Just sit down and turn the old brainbox off.

Of course, if you have already seen these films, feel free to ignore me.

[nitpick]This seems Cafe Society-ish to me[/nitpick]

Anyways, if you want hilariously bad movies, just get any episode of MST3K you can find. If you can’t find them to rent, then download some. Now. I mean it. The worst movies ever made, but so bad they’re funny.

[reply to nitpick]Perhaps IMHO, since the OP is asking for movie opinions, but Cafe Society seems to be more a place for discussing movie content, rather than suggesting films semi-randomly.[/reply to nitpick]

I also highly recommend “The Usual Suspects”

Thanks Mastema!

Emperor, Super Troopers is great! “Spread it on!”

Depending on your tastes, here are a few lesser known suggestions:

The Cook, the Theif, His Wife and Her Lover - disturbing

Actione Mutante (Mutant Action) - disturbing and hilarious

The City of Lost Children - just plain cool

The Stendahl Syndrome - because Dario Argento rules, but has a penchant for doing horrible things to his daughter on screen

The Big Labowski - perhaps more replay value than any movie I have ever seen

Dead Alive - complete gore fest, one of Peter Jacksons earlier films. especially rent if you enjoyed the Evil Dead series

This is Spinal Tap - If you like Guest at all. I thought it was hilarious

These are pretty general towards my taste. Tell us what you like, and we can do better, I’m sure.

Fist of Legend - Jet Li at his best. Action doesn’t get better than this

Oh, and if you haven’t seen it, The Breakfast Club, which everyone likes, and if they say they don’t then they’re either lying or are some horrible epoxy-based being from Wormwood, and should be detained and probed.

Yeah, like you’re ever going to find MST3K: The Movie in a store… [sub]But let me know if you do happen to find it, especially on dvd![/sub]

Three words.
Best In Show

Delicatessen.

Brazil.

Man Bites Dog.

What? I like weird. That last movie is really disturbing.

Hilariously bad (or really, just possibly the worst movie I have even had to see in a theater): Someone Like You (w/ Ashley Judd and Hugh Jackman. Forgive him, Father, for he was stil fairly new in Hollywood.)

Or:

Waiting For Guffman.

What da heck:

A Mighty Wind.

The Blockbuster down the street has it on DVD both for rent and for sale.
I wasn’t aware that it was hard to come by in other locations.

Hmmm, possible exporting scheme hatching. . .

Well, for hilariously bad movies I recommend The Astronaut’s Wife, Not Another Teen Movie, The Faculty, and any one of the Monty Python Movies.. Okay, so the Monty Python movies aren’t bad, they’re just frickin’ hilarious. My personal fave? Monty Python and the Search for the Holy Grail.

For some interesting action movies I recommend Boondock Saints, Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels, and Brotherhood of the Wolf.

For some good dramas I recommend American History X, Sleepers, Virgin Suicides, and Legends of the Fall.

For some good “messing with your mind” movies I recommend Existenz, Cube, and Vanilla Sky.

[drooling-smiley] For sale on dvd?!?! Are we talking about MST3K: The Movie - This Island Earth? Because if so, I’m gonna start drivin’ right now and snatch up those copies!

The very same. $21.99 if I recall correctly.
Our local Media Play has it also, I’m not sure if they are national or not. If so, go to the closest and have them order it for you, which they are more than happy to do.

Given the online prices I see for this (MST: This Island Earth), a long drive might be cheaper.

Yeah, those are the prices I was thinking of, although $112 is actually cheaper than many other listings I’ve seen. Anyways, cary on with the movie listing[/hijack]
