“Bei Mir Bist Du Schoen” (the Andrews Sisters made it famous, although I personally prefer the more swingin’ version by Janis Siegel on the Swing Kids soundtrack).
“Gee Baby, Ain’t I Good To You”.
“My Baby Just Cares For Me”.
“Dream a Little Dream of Me”.
“Baby, It’s Cold Outside” (duet between a man and a woman).
What kind of band do you have to record these songs?
“I Want to Be Loved By You” By Sinead O’Connor. (It’s actually very good. Who’d a thought it?)
“The Man I love” by many female singers.
“Them There Eyes” by Billie Holliday.
“Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered” by Ella Fitzgerald or Anita O’Day.
“My Funny Valentine” by Anita O’Day.
Actually, a lot of Anita O’Day’s and Billie Holiday’s stuff will fit the bill here.
Good ideas. Sway really takes my fancy, just what I was thinking - SEXY. BTW, this is not what I would choose to listen to (don’t get me wrong I do like it), I’m more of a big band swing person, however this is the music I’m doing because it suits my voice, my acting experince and (far less importantly) my image.
As for the band I don’t have a lot of choice at the moment. I’m not made of money, time or friends. I’m solo now but my father runs and conducts a 38 piece band which can be helpful (to put it lightly), I get some really good backings this way. I’ve done Santa Baby, You’re the Boss, Fever, and hanky panky in the last few months and that’s the sort of thing I want to get into. BTW I have done Gee baby ain’t I good to you, My baby just cares for me and them there eyes so that shows you’re on the right track!
“I’m Beginning to See the Light” Look for the Harry James’ Band version, I think it’s Helen Forrest (or something like that) who sings on it. Might not be sultry enough, but it’s all in the performance, right?
Lot’s of Nina Simone will work. “I Put a Spell on You” is another one that might fit.
Maybe “Falling In Love Again” made famous by Marlene Dietrich?
“Come Rain or Come Shine” by many singers.
“Don’t Get Around Much Anymore” Duke Ellighton song recorded by many singers.
“They Can’t Take that away from Me” recorded by many singers.
How about a torchy rendition of “As Time Goes By,” made famous for all time by Dooley Wilson in Casablanca? I love it when female singers reinterpret songs best-known as being sung by men.
“All the Things You Are” – I know it best as a jazz instrumental, but the lyrics are nice, in an old-fashioned way.
“Autumn Leaves” – very sad and wistful, but beautiful.
“Paper Moon” – if it’s good enough for Ella Fitzgerald…
“Let’s Do It (Let’s Fall In Love)” – Not only Ella, but Cole Poter lyrics. Can’t go wrong.
“Beyond the Sea” – another traditional male vocal number (Bobby Darin or, even better, Eddie Nichols from the Royal Crown Revue), might be good with a girl’s voice.
How Deep is the Ocean (I like Diana Krall’s version) Bye Bye, Baby from Gentlemen Prefer Blondes Do It Again as sung by Marilyn The Nearness of You Hoagy Charmichael
Thank you soooooooo much, I would hug you all if I could!
I’ve done how deep is the ocean (one of my favs), lets do it, I’m begining to see the light, don’t get around much anymore and beyond the seav (I didn’t know about the RCR conection).
Come rain or come shine, is this the same song that Frank called ‘day in day out’ (including the main chorus line: Come rain, Come shine, I first meet you and to me the day is fine…)?
To BBVL:
I do like doing songs that have been done only/mostly by men. I plan to do Ella’s version of Mack the Knife.
I’m planning record but at the moment I just sing in a club. At the moment I have very little time (uni, work, baby [not mine] in my care) but I love musical theatre, I’ve done a few shows and I plan to go back to that when I can.
If you are unfamiliar with it, there is a knockout double entendre song that Ethel Waters, Alberta Hunter and others recorded called “My Handy Man” or “My Handy Man Ain’t Handy No More.” It is a wildly wonderful and bawdy blues piece. Hunter’s version is my favorite. The lyrics differ from recording to recording. But here is a link to the Ethel Water’s version of the lyrics.
