I never knew bison could get cold

Well, at least someone sure thinks that baby bison sure do get cold. They put one in the back of their car to keep it warm. How they got it in the car without one of the parents running them over is another story.

Ah yes, the modern disconnect with nature.

They were tremendously lucky not to have been killed by the herd.

The ticket should just read STUPID.

Yes, because they knew better than nature! How do they think it lives through the winter?

Wasn’t there a woman killed (or at least hospitalized) from getting too close to the bison for a selfie?

When I was at Yellowstone a few years ago the bison tended to ignore people. Especially if you didn’t get close to them. There was one 10-12 year old boy who kept getting closer to one that was in a parking lot. The thing started snorting at the kid. I really wanted to tell the kid it was getting pissed at him and to back away.

One can’t help that animals will come near you at a park like that, I had a coyote come right by me there as well, but I was smart enough to just let it walk past.

I’ve been sick all weekend and this hilarious story just cheered me up.

…because, hey, free bison.

To be fair, infant bison would likely not make it through winter. They’re born in spring for a reason - because their survival rate through the first winter is higher when they’re as old as possible. But to be even more fair, temperatures around freezing aren’t remotely cold for bison of any age. When it’s -30C you’ll find (adult) bison standing on the open ridge facing into the wind, not giving a fuck. 0C is a pleasant spring day when you have a built-in buffalo coat.

He’s also adorable.

I don’t think the hysterical protestations “He’s COLD!” are really the reason they took the bison. I think it’s the whole “adorable abandoned baby” thing. The “abandoned” part being completely wrong, of course, but the “adorable” part is true.

Tourists.

Probably more than one person. I recall video footage from maybe 30 years ago of a bison launching a tourist a good 15-20 feet into the tree branches. Dumb national park tourists are not a new thing.

Story I’ve told a few times;

Was watching a herd in Custer State Park (South Dakota) when this van with Hawaii plates (:dubious:) pulls up and these two teen aged boys and their dad get out. Kids walk right past the large (4’x8’) sign that says “Buffalo are Dangerous. DO NOT APPROACH” (like seriously, within 10’ of it) and say to dad “Hey, get a picture of us on top of this big one”. Pointing to the largest bull around.

I turned to the dad, who was prepping his camera (this was in the 90’s, I believe), pointed at the sign and said “I don’t think that’s a good idea”.

He called his kids back and pointed them at the sign.

“I was thrown out of a bar in [del]New York City[/del] Buffalo.”

Was adorable, past tense. A friend of mine who is a retired Forest Service employee is posting that the poor baby was euthanized because the herd wouldn’t take it back after human contact.

One has to wonder if the herd didn’t want it in the first place. It does seem really strange that anyone could get near a small bison with little to no problem.

Maybe these tourists did sense a problem with this calf. They still should have left it alone. It couldn’t have been that hard to contact the rangers and find out what to do. Oh well, a cute story about stupid humans ends in tragedy for that cute little guy. I guess he’s grazing on the big prairie in the sky now.

Of course bison can get cold. Have you never eaten at Ted’s Montana Grill? Leave that burger on the plate too long and it’s gonna lose heat.

It’s still good, though.

A recent tourist idiocy with bison in Custer State Park. This was 2 days before the baby bison caper. Idiots gotta idiot. It’s too bad the animals have to be the ones to suffer for it.

Stupid tourists. This in par with the scout leaders knocking over the ancient rock formations in Utah, because they thought they were dangerous.

Here’s the National Park Service press release, for anyone who’s curious.

Morons. (The tourists, I mean, not the Park Service.)

I think the word is touron- tourist moron.

The baby bison was shunned by his tribe after being handled by the stupid humans. Eventually, the park service had to euthanize the poor creature. Sadly, the humans were released back into the wild as well and are probably doing just fine.
