85 is so insanely fast, maybe if you were on a straight freeway and everyone around you was going the same speed, maybe you’d be unaware. But through a fucking residential neighborhood?!
Magiver is so dumb he shouldn’t be banned from the board, he should be banned from anything electronic or any objects he might accidentally hurt himself or others with. Safety scissors and felt tip pens might be okay.
I put that toxic moron on mute long ago thank goodness.
And as usual he is unwilling to give an inch despite the fact that the statement he is defending is luicrous. At least he hasn’t tried to double down with an even more implausible scenario such as
“But she was absolutely surrounded by other cars going 40MPH which she thought were parked on the street and so it looked to her that she was actually just going 45?”
I kinda sorta understood what he was saying. When they first opened the 105 fwy to traffic, I was often the only car on it for miles on my work commute. I once looked down at my spedometer thinking maybe I was going 75 mph. I was pushing 90. But that’s not a huge differential, and I was on an empty, new, very well constructed, straight freeway. But I sure knew I was going fast, just not how fast.
I don’t think that’s a fair summary of his post or the point he was making. What he said was that, with the type of car this woman had, driving at 85 mph could feel 35. He didn’t say it was a mistake anyone could make, and in fact not calls her out for not looking at her speedometer. You literally quoted him saying she should hang.
I read his initial argument as pretty obvious and fairly normal hyperbole. I actually have more of a problem with the mocking responses, because of course he’s going to feel the need to defend himself, which is going to hijack the thread.
I’ve seen Magiver say some stupid, infuriating, or stupidly infuriating things, but I don’t really think this one qualifies. Some posters seem on edge.
Though I do thank you for Pitting the guy instead of continuing the hijack.
Did you read his next dozen or so posts where he completely eviscerates the defense of him you managed to concoct?
I linked to his first post, but he just went downhill from there.
Maybe I should have said that anyone driving a super car could mistake 85 for 45 in a 35. But this would only be possible if all visual cues were removed. Like driving in a pitch dark tunnel.
And it’s not as if she was driving this super car for the first time, and prior to that she was driving a Honda Fit, so she was confused by the engine purring as she broke speed records for surface road driving.
I don’t follow Magiver very much, but the one thing that sticks in my mind was when he offered his awesome aviation expertise during discussions of the problems with the Boeing 737 MAX. He explained to all us duffers that there was absolutely nothing wrong with the 737 MAX, absolutely nothing at all. And especially nothing wrong with the MCAS flight control system. The real problem? Those danged incompetent, poorly trained pilots in shithole countries. If they’d known how to fly, there wouldn’t have been a problem.
Days later, the 737 MAX was grounded worldwide, a grounding that lasted 21 months, the longest in aviation history. By the time it was over, the MCAS system had been completely redesigned. AFAIK the training of foreign pilots remains unchanged, and there haven’t been any more crashes.
Not trying to revive this topic again, just saying that Magiver’s credibility isn’t always stellar.
