Opal’s never done anything to me. It shouldn’t be so much Opal I’m pitting. but The Opal Show™ that’s taking over the social side of the SDMB, and the enabling that goes on which allows such a spectacle to take place. She’s got real problems that are evidencing on the board, and she needs real help, not {{huggies}} or spoon-fed answers to every question she poses.
It seems like the majority of Dopers either welcome The Opal Show™, or they just don’t care. SDMB staff seem complicit, too. Welcome to Fathom II, I guess.

What exactly is it that you think the staff should be doing? There are no rules against posting manically or ignoring proferred advice.

for what it’s worth, i don’t think there’s anything the staff can do about the current behavior. she’s not breaking any rules, and unfortunately no one can force a sick person to make themselves well.
That’s exactly it. As long as Opal – or anyone else for that matter – isn’t breaking any rules, there’s nothing anyone can do.
Opel gets a lot of flack because of her behavior as well as her longevity here. There have been – and perhaps still are – a lot of Dopers in similar throes. It’s akin to having an unseen target on your back in a reality competition show.
Opal may not be breaking any rules, but I seem to remember other posters receiving a “hey, you’ve started X number of threads over the past Y number of days, you might want to think about slowing it down” message from other posters if not from moderators.
Opal consistently hijacks threads to turn them into a “me me me” fest, and I seem to remember that other posters with the same behavior pattern receiving a “hijack less, please” message.
Not breaking board rules isn’t the same thing as not being an annoying poster and having the annoying stuff pointed out.
pinguin was warned repeatedly for exactly that.
