Exactly, and strangely he refuses to change his language or acknowlege that anyone should be bothered by it. In essence we’re being, “hysterical.”
So the first usage was “unintentional” the continued usage and insistence that no one could possibly find it offensive is problematic at best. The entire op, and the attitude displayed toward anyone who has a darker opinion about the direction of the trump clown show is problematic.

Every time I find a Bob Miller type in the wild, I think of you. He’s the voter you are trying to appeal to, at the cost of voters like me. Bob Miller thinks everything I have to say about anything is ‘hysterical,’ and it does not matter how reasonable or grounded in fact it may be. I know, because I went to school with a ton of Bob Millers.
And you are not as different from him as you think you are.

Bob Miller sounds like a hysterical person. I see that he wrote a newspaper editorial claiming that the United States was being attacked by foreign ants. His political views seem equally deluded. And he appears to be anti-liberal. (I’ll admit I could only read the first few lines of the article you linked to because it is subscription blocked.)
I think crazy people like Bob Miller (and the others I listed) are driving normal people away from the Republican party. I don’t see much hope in converting Miller into a Democrat and wouldn’t put much effort into appealing to him.
If I was a Republican, I’d be worried about the harm Miller and people like him are doing to the Republican party. But I’m not a Republican and I have no problem with people harming the Republican party.
I’m a Democrat. What I worry about is somebody like Miller belonging to the Democrat party and doing similar harm to the Democrats. Any appeal I direct to people like that is not to offer support. To those people, I appeal to them to shut up.
The problem isn’t that I am misreading. I understand your point of view, it just happens to be a disastrous one that will turn many Democratically inclined voters off. I am trying to get you to understand that, and you seem incapable of it.
There are many of us, mostly women, who have experienced nasty sexist attacks from people when we try to stand up for things that are important to us. Sometimes it’s less nasty. Sometimes it’s just dismissal. It is very, very, very, very, very common for those attacks to be a variation on “don’t be hysterical”. Those of us who have done any political activism from the left (and I’m sure on the right too, but I don’t know from experience) have dealt with this a lot from our opponents.
So when a purported ally does it, it feels very much like a betrayal. What’s the fucking point of trying any more? Right now I have no trust that the Democrats aren’t going to go all misogynist in their efforts to win, and I want none of it. Y’all aren’t magically protected from it, you know (witness Graham Platner, and his advocates).
You could say almost the same thing, but leave out the sexist language, and get a lot of agreement. But holding on to that language is important to you. More important than getting the goodwill of people who are going through rough times right now with respect to transphobia and misogyny.
I understand your point. I just disagree with it.
I feel that gatekeeping is a bad idea. We should not be setting standards that people need to meet before we will allow them to vote for Democratic candidates.
