Damn, I hate how Snopes won’t let you select text to copy and paste. What the hell are they worried about. I would have thought they’d be all in favor of Fair Use, they certainly take advantage of it enough themselves.

I can’t speak for the Mikkelsons, but I believe they’ve been frustrated by seeing whole articles (and not just excerpts) from their site appearing on other sites, often without attribution (and obviously without permission). The Mikkelsons frequently update their articles with corrections, new information, new variants, and new sightings; the texts of those urban legends reference pages that are copied and pasted elsewhere don’t ever get such revisions. I do suspect that snopes and Barbara are in full favor of fair use (with proper attribution) of portions of their articles; it’s just that the wholesale copying and reproduction of these articles elsewhere prevents the Mikkelsons from controlling the presentation and reliability of their research. I agree that it’s an annoyance for those of us who’d just like to make use of a bit of text here and there for purposes of discussion, etc., but in the end I do understand why they’ve resorted to making copying difficult.

Screw that. Minorities don’t get to tell the rest of us what we can and can’t say about them. And even if they did, then the majority should get to tell them what they can or can’t say. We already tiptoe far too much around the sensitive little feelings of minorities (or rather, hypersensitive subgroups within minorities who look for excuses to be offended).

What can or can’t be said in public in a society is an important indicator of who holds power in that society.

I think I figured it out. The OP’s and Frank’s version of “how to be a good white person vis-a-vis black persons” includes the idea that a white person should never say anything that could be construed as racist, even by the most sensitive black person who’s just itching for a fight.

I say fuck that. I’m not a racist, and I’m secure enough in my own concept of myself as not a racist that I can make jokes that play with racial issues without worrying about some idiot misconstruing it and thinking I’m a racist. It’s the idiot’s problem, not mine. Even worse are those getting offended on other people’s behalf (looking at you OP and Frank).

Disable Javascript in your browser and you can C&P their stuff pretty well. Don’t disable anything and you still have it all locally in your browser, obviously, and can disentangle the content from the source.
