Thanks for the clarification (and the soothing tone). And I apologise for jumping to conclusions, and to the wrong one at that. I would like to withdraw formally my implication that you are biased in any way to your friends, or those with long histories on the sdmb.
A few more general points raised by this matter. The fine distinctions that it is commonplace to make here between “attacks on the person” and “attacks on the thinking of the person as evinced by his words” is one I believe doesn’t help the board. Because it leads to lawyer-like debates about words (always the most boring and fruitless type of debate) and to people coming as close as they are permitted to breaking Rule 1 of the board, but with apparent impunity because they can always use the (defensive) escape clause of “I was referring to his post” or the (assertive) one of “He was lucky I didn’t call him a fuckdickwadassholebigotattentionwhoreliar, but I was constrained by this not being the Pit”.
I think that all baiting and goading dressed up as anticipation of someone being banned should be disallowed. Just like calling someone a troll, or making a reference to someone being on your ‘Ignore’ list.
As for the sentiment expressed by RickJay that guinnog ‘managed to ruin one of the SDMB’s better threads, which includes five years of really good material, with his blithering idiocy about how anyone who has something nice to say about relatives who fought in the war loves war’, that’s really up to you, isn’t it? If you want to let guinnog’s most recent post in that thread function as some kind of Last Post, so that you can feed off feelings of hurt and outrage, then I really do wonder if all those people died in vain or not.

Well, no, not quite. I was chastised by a Mod. The head Mod. I was pissed and insulted. I took some time off the boards, thought about what had happened and came back and apoligised. I feel better about it and perhaps anyone else involved also feels better about me. Not that I need anymore friends but its a nice thought.
What I didn’t do was start blaming everyone else for my own shortcomings. You have to realise this is going very bad for you and is not going to get better any time soon.
Unless…You own up and admit what you did, if not wrong, was at the very least, in bad taste. When I first joined I had already read the noted thread and felt it was one of the most passionate, loving and respectful things I had ever seen. As a Canadian, I was overcome by it.

In all fairness we were playing the politics of both sides, and didn’t enter the war until it seemed plausible for us to dominate Europe. The only real attack on our own soil was when we cut off Japan’s oil supply.

The guy is new, cut him some slack. The warnings given by moderators to people who truly aren’t aware they’re being “out of line” can be a bit blunt and feel humiliating. So one goes on the defensive and starts a pit thread, people start a pileon and we end up with this situation.
I think that if SkipMagic had been a little more diplomatic, we wouldn’t be here.
