It’s hard for me to stop looking at, thinking about, or discussing the meteor when it’s headed straight for my planet. But I get it, not every thread needs to be about Trump.
The topic of that thread was how Trump’s election would negatively affect the people who voted for him. How was talking about Trump going off topic?
The off-topic wasn’t just that it was about Trump. It was, as I noted in my OP, a very specific, repetitive back-and-forth argument about whether Trump’s actions would be bound or constrained by the Constitution, the Senate, laws, etc. And it’s the exact same circular argument, perpetuated by the same handful of posters, that’s occurred in multiple threads, in several different sub forums.

Trump has been the subject de jour since 2016. Neary every pit thread and in the politics and elections threads have had Trump/Trumpism/Trump Cronies etc as the main topic of conversation/argument.
Nothing has changed since then.

… and I totally agree with him! (Her?) I’ve greatly reduced my SDMB browsing since the election. I miss the daily stroll through here, I just can’t take the current atmosphere.
I avoid all the Trump crap here, but then I have to endure it at home, because my husband is obsessed with it and seldom stops talking about it. I am heartily sick of the whole subject. Wake me up in four years.
I agree –too many posts are obsessed with Trump, and those that aren’t remotely about him will very often find him introduced into the thread.
BUT—imagine you’re living in Germany in the mid-1930s, and you’re (somehow) on a messageboard, in a thread discussing new recipes for wiener schnitzel or something, and someone brings up how important it is to remember the terrible things that Hitler is in the process of doing to the Jews, the gypsies, the communists, and maybe it’s more important than wienerschnitzel right now to figure out how to stop the genocide. You gonna say in retrospect that that person is wrong, and that more wienerschnitzel recipes needed to be discussed instead of ways to cope with Hitler? (If you’re Godwin-triggered, feel free to substitute “Genghis Kahn” or “Pol Pot” etc. for “Hitler.”)
IOW, how about the concept that we’re in a terrible crisis, and people need to stay focused on that crisis and not be distracted by the pleasant illusion that things are normal?
Not saying I’m sure that talking endlessly about Trump solves anything, but I can understand how someone might feel like “How can you possibly keep chatting about trivia when the world is exploding?” Jor-El, would you quit working on that stupid rocket-ship and mow the lawn, please?
Are we losing something we value highly in giving in to this obsession with all things Trump 24/7? We are. Maybe not as much as deported immigrants and their separated children, or trans teens planning to kill themselves, or his perceived enemies preparing themselves to spend years and every cent they own defending themselves in court, or pregnant 10-year-old rape victims.
I enjoy discussing a wide range of topics here, and learning how to fix my personal problems, and helping others fix theirs, and hearing others’ views on movies and cars. Not so sure I feel good about discussing this stuff when that distracts me from my real concerns.
I would support a rule that all bag-on-Trump posts must be only in P&E and The Pit. Any Trump post outside those two fora must not be derogatory.
I don’t need post about “The Syphillitic Cheeto” popping up in everything I read to know that the next 4 years are going to be a shit show.
Then in all honesty, you need to get help compartmentlizing. I can’t be sharing my banana bread recipe here and adding on " After putting it in the oven, Fuck Trump and his tariffs. That will make inflation worse."
If that happens here, please flag. That is a threadshit, a pretty dumb one too. Though I think you mean the article has been shat upon.

We have 639 threads tagged trump currently. Those are places to talk about Trump.
This is pretty much official, I know I’m ready to start handing out warnings and not just notes to those that bring Trump up in non-political and non-Trump threads.

My apologies for misreading the intent of the thread. I fully endorse not bringing him into every single discussion. My lack of perspective stems from my paying more attention to political threads where he is indeed a factor as well as sports threads where he is not a factor. I personally haven’t encountered examples where he is invoked in an unrelated thread, due to my own pattern of thread surfing.
And if you are to have the strength to fight Trump, however you might do that, you need to care for your mental health. That means sometimes smelling the grass and cooking pasta without thinking about Trump.
I have been guilty of bringing up Trump. Will we have this kind of healthcare or that imported ingredient a year from now? Hell, i just paid a lot of money to buy a computer i didn’t need in part because I’m worried it will be hard to get one going forward.
But people really do need to be able to talk about stuff without constantly being reminded of Trump. Please report trump discussions breaking into unrelated threads. That’s why this place is moderated.

A few years ago we had a thread about beers and someone dumped the factoid the CEO and elder statesmen of Yuengling supported Trump in 2016. I flagged it and one of the other mods slapped it down as a threadshit. This is nothing new. But it is happening a lot more this year understandably.
