I suppose you know that this means wah!
Scooby Doo was predictable. That’s right, I said it.
I occasionally get annoyed with all mehing that goes on about Citizen Kane around here. I get the impression that a lot of people only knew it from hearing it was “the greatest American film ever” for several years, then caught half of it on Turner Classic Movies one rainy Saturday afternoon and looked for reasons not to like it so they could be different. They can’t intelligently bash it because they don’t know it that well, so they say they just didn’t care for it or damn it with faint praise by saying it was good or ok. I admit that this is very personal which is why I’ve never started a thread about it or called anybody out on it or anything. The movie meant/means a lot to me.
And you would have gotten away with it, too, if it weren’t for those meddling kids.
And that dog. Don’t forget the dog.
(To Say Nothing of the Dog)
I spend a lot of time in Cafe Society, and will continue to do so, but I sympathize with the OP. When I saw the thread on “least deserving Oscar winners” my first thought was: didn’t we just do this?.. OK, Forrest Gump, Braveheart, Dances with Wolves. We can close the thread now.
No, you illustrated how ignorant you are about Frank Lloyd Wright’s career specifically, and modern architecture generally. Your derogatory remark showed no insight, no understanding, and precluded the possibility of discussion. If anything was “hollow,” your rant demonstrated this better than my OP could.
Oh, because classic buildings never have similar problems. What a maroon.
Look, I’m not surprised my OP isn’t getting a lot sympathy here. After all, you are largely the same people who are making Cafe Society such a pretentious disappointment.
But I still think I’m right. There are a lot of negative posts and threads containing nothing but bashing in Cafe Society. I wish there were fewer. I wish people would try to learn something substantial bout Frank Lloyd Wright’s career (for an example) and his designs and influences, instead of reflexively saying he was a shitty architect–nothing but a poorly thought-out, off-the-cuff “opinion” with no understanding or knowledge behind it.
The problem isn’t criticism. The problem is too much moronic, baseless criticism. There is much to criticize about FLW’s designs (to continue the example)–that’s not the point. Dismissing his whole career with nothing more than a cursory “his buildings are ugly and none of them work” is very, very stupid. It’s ignorant.
For those of you who love to pontificate about things you know little about, and have spent almost no time actually studying your topic but just want to spout ignorant, derogatory gibberish–you obviously like things as they are. That’s too bad.
You can never have too many explosions. I invoke Mythbusters as my “Appeal To Authority” here.
so there.
I’ll never understand why Forrest Gump is almost universally loathed here, while stuff like Slumdog Millionaire, The Dark Knight, and Crash* get drooled over. I’ve never met anyone in real life who didn’t like Forrest Gump.
*a mentionable minority agrees with on this one
I really don’t think so. Maybe you’re just ignoring them more than I am…
And once again, the problem is NOT that such posts exist. I am not so insecure in my own tastes that I am bothered by some imbecile bashing something I like. Besides which, sometimes I agree with the bashing (e.g. I found “Dances With Wolves” to be insipid drivel, and poor film-making.) It’s that there are so many of those basharama type threads, and so few substantive discussions to balance it out.
I think I’ve more than demonstrated that I am fully capable of defending my own opinion. You’re making an assumption that I have not–or often don’t–defend my opinion when called upon. That shows an strong ignorance about me. You know nothing about me. You don’t know what I know a lot about, or what I know little about. You don’t know anything about what I can and have done to support my own statements, and are obviously ignoring my own contributions to this thread beyond the OP. And yet you feel justified in making a little, stupid, drive-by swipe. Typical idiocy. You also have reading comprehension issues, or you might have noticed that I mentioned that at times I agree with the negative opinions, but course if you had noticed that you would also have noticed that this wasn’t the point in the first place.
Kindly flush your head down the Worst Toilet in Scotland, you rancid dishcloth-brained ignoramus.
Indeed, that is why I specifically mention Gump. It was a great movie. I thought a few of the posters were going to attack me for daring to dislike “The Dark Knight” in the Oscar thread. It was fairly comical.
I got a better one for you, I dislike Titanic fiercely. So I must be one of those elitist putting on negative airs to impress the others but of course if I mention that I loved Independence Day then surely I am some goof ball. It is all a matter of taste. Nothing makes Titanic or Dark Knight a better movie than Independence Day. All of them are big budget thrillers without great writing so it depends on if that writing works for you.
Citizen Kane might be boring to some or overrated to many but it is clearly a different type of movie from the three I just mentioned. It was a character study and the director really worked hard to create a mood. It was art not just mass media.
Did you read the thread? Most people don’t have a problem with Forrest Gump and consider it entertaining. The argument was instead that Forrest Gump in no way deserved to win the Oscar for best picture over The Shawshank Redemption.
Did you read this message board for the last 9 years?
Don’t forget, in this hypothetical perfect world everyone likes everyone and everyone looks like everyone.
How utterly boring.
Fail. Try reading for comprehension.
To be honest, I only see one truly pretentiously insufferable person here (and out of the threads mentioned).
And that’s Knorf.
Thanks, I appreciate your attempts to understand, and in no way just idiotically toss off an ad hominem in lieu of actually addressing any actual points.
Fine, you all keep the Cafe the way you like. By all means, don’t consider how discourse may be improved if you all don’t just reflexively fire off epithets and thoughtless, derogatory quips.
Maybe you have a point. But Juno was still a piece of shit.
I liked Juno, it was entertaining. I think I gave it an 8 on the IMDB. The parents were exceptionally good. It was a dialog driven movie and I enjoyed the dialog. Not surprisingly I am a big Kevin Smith fan and Tarantino fan.
So opinions vary.
