I pit you, US womens soccer goalkeeper!

I’m probably thinking of red cards, but come on- sickeneing? These are young girls, girls who have lost 22 of 23 to the US- this is App. State beating Michigan type stuff, surely you can give them a pass for not acting like they’ve been this once, cause the haven’t

Ah, nothing like a little controversy to stir up interest in the sport! I’m all for it.

I actually had highly paid Premier League athletes behaving like three-year-olds in mind when I wrote that (or John Terry’s hilarious “if I steal the ref’s card, it won’t count” gambit from last week). But no, I’m not sure celebrating an opponent getting sent off is particularly excusable at any level, especially if (as appears to be the case), it’s a remarkably dubious decision.

And obviously, I use “sickening” only within the context of what is, after all, just a game. In a real world nauseation context I’d rank it alongside gas station egg sandwiches, “rank” being the operative word.

Bad call to start Scurry, bad call to announce that (after thinking about it for “months”) two days before the game, bad call not to bring on an additional attacker in the second half, bad coaching all around.

Dissappointed by Solo’s tirade. Interesting question as to whether she’ll play in the 3rd place game (foot in mouth – oops!).

Great play by Marta. (But if I were defending her and she started to do that little samba behind the ball, I’d have taken her out – red card be damned.)

Actually, I’m curious what people think about this. I was okay with it – a bit of taunting there, but it was whimsical, and damned if the American team didn’t deserve some taunting at that point.

Don’t get me wrong - I play sports (not professionally), I did the theatre thing in high school and college, and I’m in journalism now, which has a similar ethic in some ways. So I think I also understand how that “team first” ideal matches up to reality, too. Theatre isn’t a competition, this is. And it’s basically over for them. I’m not saying I admire what she said, it just doesn’t bother me that she dispensed with the usual lip service you hear in that situation.

I’m torn- I think its cute but ultimately pointless. Then again, many male players like Christiano Ronaldo do similar moves all the time.

At least she doesn’t do this, which gets opponents riled up like nothing else for some reason- I think it has some actual benefit depending on how used (he’s moving the ball downfield with less chance of it being taken than if he was using his feet), but opponents don’t see it that way.

Now, to me that’s smart football – he’s using his skills, and drawing a penalty.

You’d use one of three subs on a goalie in a game in a knockout tournament that you’re losing by two goals?!

3 of those 4 goals, arguably, were because of a poor keeper. The own goal was a lack of communication along with a boneheaded play by the defender. The keeper needs to call her off. The second and fourth( I think, the amazing one) were both poor shots and not difficult saves that the keeper messed up.

I don’t have a problem with the comments. The third place game doesn’t matter. Both the coach and Scurry should be done with the national team. She wasn’t really calling out anybody but the coach though, Scurry was collateral damage. I’m really kind of baffled by home completely fucking stupid it is to make that keeper change. I’d think that most of the team questioned it and that messes with your confidence. Sure Brazil deserved to win, but the coach didn’t help the US’s chances and I’m glad he got called on it.

Missed the edit window. Here’s how I feel about taunting or showboating. Yes the guy deserved a red card.

Christiano Ronaldo isn’t a taunter. He pulls his moves to try to get people to bite and then blow buy them. I didn’t see the whole game so I don’t know if what was done was an attempt to be effective or taunting.

I agree with that. I really liked how Brazil played in the olympic gold medal game 3 years ago (even though I was cheering for the US), and I was all ready, before this game, to say “well, if Brazil wins, then I’ll totally be cheering for them vs. Germany”. Now, not so much, entirely because of that one moment.

It does seem silly that they can’t use instant replay or something to avoid such blatantly wrong calls. In a case like that one it would have been an easy call, and avoided an unfair and potentially game changing result. (Although, given how thouroughly Brazil was outplaying the US, Boxx being out may not have meant much.)

Damn right, I agree. These are the pros, not junior little leagues. We don’t need to worry about hurt feelings and bruised egos. If you can’t be straight up and call the screw ups like you see them, then you are just a faceless figurehead for the media.

“I came out, gave it 110%. The other team made some good plays and we should’ve stepped up. 110%.” Blech, complete crap.

"The coach made the wrong call and disrupted our rythym and synergy that we’d built. There is no way that goalies can be tailored to match a past opponent’s team of 4 years ago and have any impact on the game. The coach fucked up. " Much better, and honest, and her team and coach would respect her more for it.

Her only flaw in her remarks was that she should have pointed her criticism against her defense players instead of the goalie, it was the defenders that allowed those shots to happen.

See, my issue with this is that it is the pros. Scurry should have at least been given the chance to say that she fucked up. When you make a mistake on the field at this level of play you own up to it. Calling your teammates out publicly disrupts the harmony of a team. Its just plain wrong and Solo should never have take personal shots in her little tirade.

I have no issue with speaking your mind but keepers set up a considerable amount of the action on the field. They play a significant leadership role but it was very hard to take away anything, that reflects the qualities of a good leader, from Solo’s interview.

She didn’t call out Scurry, she called out the coach

PTI just reported the guy in this video who took out the seal dribbler with an elbow to the head just got a 4-month (!) ban.
She didn’t call out the other goalie? “I would have had those shots?” “You can’t pick a team based on the name?” “It’s not 2004, what happened three years ago is irrelevant?” That’s not calling her out, indirectly?

But she hereself didn’t think it was calling out her either, becasue she has just been quoted as saying she stands by her comments about the coach, but hates it that some felt her comemtns were calling out her teammate, “which she wouldn’t do”? Has she not seen the tape of herself saying what she said? She’s an idiot.

Scurry didn’t put herself in the game. Solo thinks she’s better than Scurry. Saying that you think you’re better than somebody doesn’t mean you’re insulting them. I mean if Scurry was better why didn’t she play the whole tournament, why was Solo the starting keeper for 90% of the games in the past 3 years? If Peyton Manning got benched for whoever his backup is and the Colts lost, don’t you think Manning would say he thinks he would have done better? Would there be a controversy about that?

Bad example. There are few certainties in life- one of them is that Peyton Manning would never trash a coach or teammate, ever. Too much class.

There’s nothing wrong with her thoughts on the matter, but saying them shows a lack of class. And there’s no need to state the obvious anyway- everyone was on her side, now they’re trashing her, and the stupid ass has even come out with the old stand-by “it was taken out of context”. No it fucking wasn’t- everyone who saw it saw the whole interview- you implied your teammate was shit. That’s just not done, no matter how many people think its OK to do- I can’t think of one instance of a player ever saying something like that right after a game, not even the assholes. And for her to state that she didn’t slam the other girl insults everyone’s intelligence and brands her as gutless as well as classless- if you’re that passionate and convinced about it, why backpedal?

Um…
