I would say there is a bit of a difference between a comment like that and one that calls out a specific teammate by name. If she had said “our team played like crap tonight”, I wouldn’t think anyone would have a problem with that.
But I’ll admit, I’m surprised he said even that. :smack:

He made the kicker comment in the offseason, after the kicker trashed him and the coach.

She didn’t imply her teammate was shit. For instance, on the own goal, that’s caused by a lack of familiarity between two players. That’s not being shit, that’s being stuck into a situation you shouldn’t be.
Saying she didn’t slam Scurry isn’t insulting anybody’s intelligence because she didn’t. She said that it was a mistake to think that because Scurry beat Brazil 3 years ago that she’d be the better choice. She didn’t say she’s a bad player, she didn’t say she made poor decisions, she didn’t call her promiscuous. She simply said that she thought she should have played instead. Anybody that was in her position that would have said differently is a liar. That or they’re gutless and that’s one characteristic that you can’t have.
A very large amount of people on a soccer site that I frequent are with me that she was insulting the coach, not the player at all. This pitting is so off base I can’t understand it. Pointing out a bias towards the 1999 team and she gets trashed? Come on.
Julie Foudy is so full of shit saying how if she was on the team that she wouldn’t want Solo in the goal. She’s so freaking biased towards her former teammate.
For perspective, the context here would be similar to benching Tom Brady in favor of Vinny Testeverde if the Patriots faced the Dolphins in the divisional round of the playoffs.
If there is any team that Tom Brady has struggled against, it’s the Dolphins. And Vinny – now a backup QB for the Patriots – had some historic victories against the Dolphins when he was on the Jets. (Including the “Miracle at Midnight”, which I attended in person. Go Vinny!)
Possibly the dumbest move ever. And that stupid fucking coach not only blew his team’s chances for the cup, but the fallout has tarnished Hope Solo. That’s particularly bad because pretty much the only reason to watch US women’s soccer was because they had a hot goalie. Women sure as hell won’t deign to watch women’s sports, so the only recourse is to attract men. And because women’s sports are inferior to men’s, the only draw is eye candy.
Apart from having a hot goalie, there’s pretty much no reason to watch women’s soccer in the US. I actually grew up with one of the team members and I don’t even watch. I get my fill watching amateur-level niche sports by not watching any at all, thankyouverymuch.

3 of those 4 goals, arguably, were because of a poor keeper. The own goal was a lack of communication along with a boneheaded play by the defender. The keeper needs to call her off. The second and fourth( I think, the amazing one) were both poor shots and not difficult saves that the keeper messed up.
I don’t have a problem with the comments. The third place game doesn’t matter. Both the coach and Scurry should be done with the national team. She wasn’t really calling out anybody but the coach though, Scurry was collateral damage. I’m really kind of baffled by home completely fucking stupid it is to make that keeper change. I’d think that most of the team questioned it and that messes with your confidence. Sure Brazil deserved to win, but the coach didn’t help the US’s chances and I’m glad he got called on it.

Right. She should apologize to Scurry though. Ryan deserved every comment made by Solo.

The USSF press guy could’ve prevented all of this if he’d been a bit less heavy handed about player interviews:
‘We were busy getting a clip from Abby Wambach when I saw Hope Solo, clearly upset, walking by. I said quietly, “Hope, do you want to comment?” The press person for the U.S., Aaron Heifetz, said out loud to me, “She didn’t play, you only want to talk to people who played the game.” Hope spun on her heels when she heard Heifetz say that and said, “No, I want to talk!”’
Of course, you only want to talk to the people who played that game that aren’t Scurry:

Hope recently lost her father and really wanted to win this for him. She had that idiot Ryan pull the rug out from under he in one of the most bizarre coaching decisions I’ve seen. I don’t blame her.
