Good question. I might.
I could see me freaking out when the cops showed up to say I walked off with 5 grand (that I still doubt ever existed). Resisting arrest would be the more likely outcome that a week in the booby hatch, though.
Agreed. UnLESS…she has a history of suicidal behavior or if “freaked out” involved wingin’ chairs and smashing phones against the wall, which I don’t think was made clear in this thread.
A lot depends on what she said, as well. If ‘freaking out’ consisted of saying “I’m gonna kill that fucking bitch!” or “I’m so upset I want to die!”, then yeah, you’re going to get a quick trip for a psych evaluation.
(Not putting words in the OP’s mouth, just giving an example)
Does five thousand dollars strike anyone else as an awfully convenient amount? It sounds so made up to me. I’m also wondering what kind of place Annie worked that has that kind of cash lying around.
If the same story happened to me, it would be really easy to prove my boss was being VB. A lot of money goes through here, but never in cash. Ever.
Different guy.
Annie, I feel for you in your situation. It baffles and outrages me that anyone could be subjected to an involuntary committment on such grounds, but I have no illusions that it doesn’t happen, and probably more often than most people are willing to accept.
In your dreams, maybe.
The thing that really sticks out to me is this:
Point 1: The police go immediately from sympathetic (“expressed surprised [sic] at how shitty I had been treated”) to arresting her. It seems like there might be just a wee bit missing here.
Point 2: The section I bolded for emphasis: her boss has seen her “freak out hundreds of times.” Uh … I’ve been in the working world for, oh, 25 or 30 years now, and the number of times I have “freaked out” at work is … exactly zero. Hell, I think I can count number of times I’ve lost my temper on one hand and the number of times I’ve raised my voice at a coworker on the other and still have plenty of fingers left.
Again, it seems to me that there might be a little more to the story here than we’re being told.
A few years ago, someone (I can’t remember who) posted about a similar experience. He had gotten into a car accident, and when he exited his car he walked – totally disoriented – in a random direction that just so happened to be into traffic. He was held overnight in deplorable conditions due to his suicidal tendancies.
I agree. I’m that last person that “freaks out” within eye- or ear-shot of anyone but the spousal unit. Anyone who freaks out “hundreds” of times is not someone who take up regular space in my life. Seems we have two separate situations here: the cop thing and the nut house.
I freaked out a bunch of times at a job that I only held for 8 months. I only did so when my boss was acting like himself.
It was wrong of me to freak out, and I’m a lot more composed these days. But I wasn’t mentally ill. My boss really was that much of an asshole. Everyone that worked for him freaked out every now and then.
Perhaps I have watched too much Law & Order, but it would not surprise me if the cops were less sympathetic to her than it appeared and when a confession was not forthcoming “good cop” time was over.
I can’t believe all the doubt about her “freaking out”. I think if I finally quit a job where I was under a lot of constant stress and then found out that I was being accused of grand larceny by my former boss and may be forced to pay back money I didn’t take or even have, I think I’d freak out a bit, too.
Maybe I read it wrong, but I thought the freak came before the accusation.
Hundreds of times over the last twenty-seven years. Then another, when she quit, and then one more when the police came to question her.
But it might be informative to know what exactly was said during the last two freaks.

Shodan
Yeah, as stated previously, there’s a big difference between a freak-out that involves some yelling and perhaps a little hyperventilating, and one that involves suicide threats, throwing stuff at cops, and claiming to be the reincarnation of Michael Jackson. Not that I am suggesting that Annie-Xmas did any of the latter, of course; just pointing out that the term “freaking out” can cover a really wide variety of situations.
It’s pretty obvious to me that she’s leaving out significant information from the story.
I now have a hunch that - perhaps - she was admitted the ward for a good reason.
Speaking as someone who knows personally about psych wards…comparing the fact that you aren’t hungry after surgery with being not hungry after being locked up for being bat-shit crazy is a just a bit out there.
Granted…it may be real, BUT after reading this thread over and over three damn times, I feel that it’s nothing but yet another drama attack from annie-xmas, which has been done so many times before.
My opinion. Like it. Lump it. Suck it. I couldn’t care less.

Just a little personal experience of mine. I worked in a small office with 4-5 people who had access to a common till. Small amount of money in it as a base, maybe $200. The office manager/accountant was the owner’s wife and had poor math and accounting skills. Usually there was no daily balance done on the till. She just put the base amount back in and deposited the rest. This was the practice for months at a time.
I did not want to even touch this till due to these practices. But usually everything was fine and handling money wasn’t part of my job anyway.
But every once in awhile she would comment to whomever was around that the till was ‘short’ $20. Then again a few days later, short again some other amount. This invariably meant that someone was being fired soon or laid off.
It was never about the money and that was never the reason for letting them go, but it was like a fall-back reason in case the person threw a fit. The remaining employees knew the soon to be leaving person wasn’t taking money.
I saw it over and over during the course of 2 years. Never happened to me but I learned to cringe each time it happened. Who’s it this time?
I doubt that there really is $5000 missing. The cops don’t check the books when you are arrested but eventually the DA has to get to the bottom of things. I think it would be very easy for the business owner to just ‘disappear’ $5k to get back at you. But good luck trying to prove it.
When was the last one?
