I don’t know if anyone else has this problem, or has even noticed this box, but it’s really starting to get on my nerves. Let’s leave aside the issue of how often someone is going want to get all Web 2.0-y and submit the latest thread on a new Star Wars parody to - let’s see - ClassicalPlace? That’s a real option - and how some of us like this place to remain old and crotchety and out of step with the rest of the web. That’s irrelevant.
What’s pissing in my Cheerios is the fact that this damn box pops up upon mouseover, obscuring text that’s part of the actual thread, and then half the time won’t go away unless I mouse up to the X in the corner. It’s really really annoying. I’m sure not everyone Dopes the way I do, but I open up a whole series of threads in individual tabs, then go through them one by one. Many times, I go up and click on a tab, then move my mouse back down so I can scroll down. Depending on the position of the tab, I often accidentally mouse over the damn Share box thing, which causes extreme grrr.
It wouldn’t even be so bad if the box disappeared when I click elsewhere in the window, which is what it’s supposed to do, based on my experience on other sites that use the blasted thing, but half the time it takes at least 3 clicks to make it go away, and the other half it won’t go away at all unless I click the X.
In short, the box adds absolutely nothing of value to this place (except, I’m sure, the odd penny into the coffers), and is a major detriment. I understand the need to keep it around to feed the gaping maw of profitability, but could we at least turn off the mouseover popup? If someone really really wants to inform the good folk at Digg that gun control is bad or that Conan did something funny last night, I’m sure they won’t mind one extra click. Or failing even that, can we at least move it way over to the right, out of the way of major mouse traffic lanes, where “Display Modes” lives?
Please don’t mistake my jocular tone for a lack of sincerity in this request.
