Am I the only Doper who’s seen it, or just the only one willing to admit it?
I actually quite enjoyed it. Really. Nobody will be holding their breath when the Oscar nominations come out, of course, but taken for what it is, it’s a fun time at the movies.
First of all, these guys did a fairly amazing job of mimicking the mannerisms of the original Stooges. Not only the “bits”, but little stuff like simply walking, *standing *even. All the postures, facial expressions, etc., were spot-on. If they’d missed by even a little it would have been a pale imitation, but they nailed it so fully that it actually comes off as lovingly nostalgic. With the exception of one prominent fart joke, they didn’t really try to update the comedic sensibility much either. It’s mostly good, clean, silly slapstick, expertly executed. Credit where credit is due.
So okay, it isn’t much of a film, plot-wise. But it’s just plain funny. I laughed a lot, and I laughed out loud. That’s pretty much all I was looking for. And, true to the Farrelly Brothers formula, it got a little sappy at the end. But you know what, I bought the sappiness. They actually managed to earn a little bit of emotional attachment from me. Go figure.
Bottom line, if you’re a fan of the Stooges, I think you’ll enjoy and appreciate this movie. If you’re not, well then, why’d you even open this thread?
It looked good from the commercials. Movie ticket prices are so high that I’ll wait until it’s available for rent. Then I’ll invite the guys over and the nyuks will begin! The gals will probably leave, more’s the pity.
I say it a couple weeks ago and loved it. I was worried that it wouldn’t work as a full-length movie, but they divided it into three shorts and somehow that made all the difference.
I did not realize they had done it this way. That would make all the difference. The Stooges worked best in a short format. I need some Y chromosomes to see this with. I highly doubt my lovely and talented wife would willingly see this.
Good to hear the good reviews in this thread. I’ve been excited to see this but I’m going to wait until it comes out on dvd and just buy it. I’ve lost all interest in theaters and I was thinking that this movie would be the one to get me back in the theater but now that it’s out I still would rather wait for in on dvd.
From the commercials it looks like Sasso and Hayes just nail the characters.
Thanks for the review. I am a big fan of the Stooges and im not sure how I will feel watching this. Now I know how my husband ( who thinks the only real Batman is the 1966 Batman) feels at the Batman movies
In lieu of guy friends to see the show with you could look for kids. Kids of both genders tend to love the stooges. My daughters lose it watching them while my wife sits stonefaced. I think we may have a mom’s night in while I take the kids to the movies soon.
I haven’t seen it yet but my brother says he really enjoyed it.
My concern was that that kind of comedy just doesn’t work well (at least for me) in a full length film, so I’m glad to hear that they broke it into three shorts.
I introduced my 8 year old to the comic genius of Howard, Fine, and Howard. He loved it, but he’s gone and gotten himself grounded for a couple of weekends.
I hadn’t even realized it was released. I saw the trailer on Youtube, but I pay zero attention to what’s coming out in theaters. Good to hear it’s funny all the way through though, I cracked up at the trailer.
