I saw this rerun of Saturday Night Live

This morning I saw a rerun of Saturday Night Live on Comedy Central. I started watching about 10 minutes into it, so I didn’t see the intro, and I didn’t get to see the announcement of the host’s name.

I want to know who the host was. I didn’t recognize him, but he was a very interesting fellow. He didn’t seem to be an actor or commedian - in fact he seemed to me to have the demeanor one might expect from a physicist or other kind of scientist. But what was interesting to me was that the fellow seemed to have pretty good camera presence and comic timing - though you could tell he really wasn’t an actor. (Or if he is, you can tell he’s not actually a good one…)

So anyway, in the episode, there was a skit about Newt Gingrich in which the host played a very different kind of Richard Nixon. There was a skit called “stop that” where the host played a guy who was doing a talk show in which he repeated everyrthing his guests said to him until they ran away in frustration. Also, there were a series of “commercials” in which he and one of the SNL regulars (Chris something - skinny guy with a scraggly beard) played dentists competing for customers in a way parodically similar to the way polititians compete for votes on TV.

Does this sound familiar to anyone? Does anyone remember the name of the guy who hosted that show?

John Turturro

Was it Steve Forbes?

Whoops, bluethree is right. But John Turturro is an excellent actor!

BTW, that “Chris somebody” you mention was probably (going by your description) Chris Eliot.

Also, given the airdate of that episode (November 1994), it was probably to promote his role in Quiz Show, which was a pretty well-known movie at the time.

(And this page has some screencaps from the episode that proves it was JT)

HEY! That’s Teve Torbes to you, buster!
