I am not a Democrat. Nor am I a Republican, though I was raised as one. I consider myself a conservative Libertarian, but on the whole I’m what gets called a “fiscal conservative/social liberal”, and the end result is that I agree with the “left” on some issues and agree with the “right” on other issues.
So not long ago, I signed a petition at change.org in support of some issue or other that the “left” also supports (though now I can’t remember what it was; I’ve signed any number of petitions over there).
The organization that apparently started the petition, the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, seems to have taken my “signature” to be compelling evidence that I’m a loyal Democrat and has since been spamming my e-mail non-stop with links to other petitions to sign (many on sites other than change.org), along with repeated requests for donations. The last few such missives have all been along the lines of “Oh sweet jebus! Teh evul Karl Rove (we’re telling you his name to make you boo and hiss) is spending money on (gasp!) advertising for Republican candidates! Everybody know that he who spends the most money wins, so we need ur help!”
sigh I’ve signed a petition or two in support of “conservative” issues as well, but I haven’t gotten a single e-mail from the Republicans.
Even worse, neither the “Click here to unsubscribe from our crap” link, nor the alternate “reply to this message with the word ‘unsubscribe’ in the subject” method have made this stuff stop coming.
Okay, I’ll modify this bit. The link didn’t work when I clicked it in my plain-text-only e-mail client — the DSCC’s web site gave me an error message — but did work when I viewed the HTML mail in my browser. Now to see if it actually unsubscribes me.
I signed up for a free Obama LGBT sticker and now I get emails from Obama, Joe, their wives, uncles, neighbors and long-lost friends. I never got my free sticker though.
I’m surprised nobody else is bothering you. I think “petitions” like that are mainly for collecting email addresses of [del]easy marks[/del] possible supporters.
Upside, downside. The Dems have moved to a strategy of massive numbers of small contributions, a move away from the Clintonista scheme of sucking up to big business. A move I heartily endorse, power to the people-wise.
Downside: they have to beg us for the money. Or lose.
