It has has been coming to that. I have been cutting my own hair with a trimmer for over ten years and I keep going shorter.
About 2 weeks ago I shaved it completely with a razor and all. I let it go for about the first week, now I shave it every day almost. I love it when it is perfectly smooth.
I have not shaved my face in about 12 years. So it is kinda fun getting out a razor and some cream. If I know myself I will get really into it and probably research and buy a straight razor and get really good at it then bore of the daily chore and stop.
I am really liking it so fan and hope I turn it into a habit before I bore of it.
In VN, I shared a hootch w/ the chief Corpsman. One weekend we decided, after liberal amounts of alcohol, to shave our heads. Both of us were sober enough to realize that neither wanted a drunk going after our heads w/ a razor, so he called one of his men who agreed to do the deed.
First thing monday morning we we both summoned to report to the OinC’s office. Now our CO, a LCDR who we affectionately called “Fast Eddie”, was a pretty good guy, but he was responsible for good order and discipline, so we were wondering if we had gone too far this time. We entered his office, which was occupied by our CO and several of his officers, all looking quite serious. Military people instinctively know to remove their hats when entering a building, but both of us overlooked that courtesy. Fast Eddie was having none of that and immediately ordered us to “uncover” at which point the room errupted into gales of laughter and derisive comments about our pale domes. We were the talk of the camp for a day or so, kind of an unintended morale booster.
Come summer, it’s all coming off. I use a Number 1 comb on my trimmer every few weeks at present, but I have awful dandruff. So a few weeks of sun, fresh air and emollients should do it wonders.
Had I known how much I was going to enjoy being bald; I would have started shaving it when I was 18!
It’s great being able to wake up in the morning and NOT have to deal with bed-head.
Plus it doesn’t hurt that women are constantly wanting to rub my scalp.
I first shaved my head a few weeks before I turned 18. I kept it shaved up until August of last year, when I decided to grow a mohawk, and the end of December, since my sister wants me to have real hair when she gets married in June.
Yep. And being able to use only a dollop of shampoo in the morning, and being able to forgo that in a hurry and not do any damage.
Oh, yeah. Although for me it happens more often when I have several days of growth, so that I’m actually fuzzy rather than raspy.
Hee hee hee… I remember the first time my brother asked me to Bic his head- he still wasn’t good at doing it himself then (he’s great at it now). I asked him if he remembered how many scars I had on my legs from shaving when I was younger, and asked if he REALLY wanted me shaving his head. But I did a good job- its easier than my legs.
Nothing like being able to comb your hair with a washrag, or so I hear.
I’m glad to see someone else agrees with me on that point, when my hair reaches about a centimetre or so, my scalp becomes itchy and flaky, shave and it calms.
I’m glad to find out that it does - I’m getting fed up with the constant personal snowstorm, and scalp shaving is an act of desperation. But I’ll use an electric razor to keep it short, not a wet shave.
I did it once, when I ended chemotherapy (actually quit a few weeks early to keep my stupid job) and my hair was brittle; figured I’d start with a clean slate. My girlfriend said I looked like an escaped convict (I mean, more than usually), and has begged me not to do it again.
A few summers ago I was working at a big car show in Atlanta, and got to look at a lot of young people (which I usually avoid doing). Seemed like about 10% of the white guys in their twenties (and more like 30% of the black guys) had shaven heads. I think it usually looks better on black guys because you don’t have that shiny pink dome.
Congrats if you’re able to pull it off. I shave it pretty close with clippers, to about a quarter inch, but the one time I bic’d it I looked like a freakin neo-nazi. Then I went to have my license photo taken.
no, no, officer, I love black people. I mean, I don’t love love them, at least not all of them, but I just meant… you know, you’re looking remarkable today, officer. Who is your barber? sigh…
I wish I had balls to shave like that. Every guy I knew in Alaska looked like a wool rug. Good on you for bucking the trend. Will you stay so shorn next winter?
I’m not doing it for aesthetics - I think that I and my wife will probably hate it. But if it works, it will be worth it. And if it does not work, well, it’s only hair, it’ll grow back.
Welcome to the club. I shave mine about once every three days or so, right down to the wood. I use a Gillette Mach 3, but I’ve also tried the Headblade. It’s a good concept, but it doesn’t work well for me. I suspect it’s because I have thick hair that grows every which way, so I need to be able to hit all the angles if I’m going to get a real smooth shave.
And if you want a real smooth shave, I find that shaving with shaving cream, then rinsing and finishing the job with a shaving oil works well. I use Somerset’s Shaving Oil.
Fusion razor, Edge gel, shave every morning in the shower. Trust me on this one. The Fusion is made for those of us who shave our noggins. The minor hassle of shaving is monumentally outweighed by all the things we don’t have to worry about any more: bedhead, combs, dandruff, hair blowing in your eyes while driving, etc.
The hockey players in HS used to shave in the shower, while the rest of us looked on in horror, wondering what the outcome would be if the slipped a bit. At least the era of the straight razor is nigh gone, or I’d probably still have nightmares about it.
I started this a few years ago after doing the “0” setting on the electric for a few years. Best move ever! I tried that head razor that fits into the palm of your hand. Looked like I came in 2nd in an axe fight. Never again. I’ve been using a Shick Quattro, and it works great. Follow that with Bald Guys brand moisturizer, and your slick as hell and ready to go.
