Why do some men, mostly athletes, it seems, shave their heads?

Band name!
And they could all have enormous afros.
The answer is pretty obvious. It’s trendy and easy to manage.
Eh, I did it before it was cool.
It IS easier to manage, though. As an added plus, I’m hydrodynamic!
I’m not an athlete (computer geek) and I get my head shaved once every 1-2 months. My head isn’t shaved bald but there’s only 1/4 of an inch of hair left.
I do it because its easier to wash and dry and its faster.
Also more comfortable in hot weather.
I just realized something, I’ve been shaving my head now for 10 years. How time flies.
I’ve been sporting a number two (electric clippers to about 1/4 inch) for 7 years for three reasons: it’s easier to care for, I don’t get bed-head, and nothing else looks as good. I’m half bald, very thin on top, and when the hair is longer it looks silly to me. It’s as if I’m trying to appear as if I have hair when all I really have up there are a handful of lonely hairs. If I were shiny up top, then longer hair on the sides would be okay. But long isolated strands are goofy.
A couple weeks ago I shaved. Guys contemplating the 'do: it’s a LOT cooler, be careful of the sun (especially at first), and the look requires regular maintenance–a little growth is quite noticeable at this stage. The time saved in the shower is more than made up for in front of the mirror. I think I’ll go back to clippers every couple of weeks. Closest setting.
Lightin’: If you’re completely smooth, how often do you have to shave? Don’t you find it difficult? Maybe I just need more practice.
Yea, count me in with the cueballs. I shave my hair with my clippers about once a week and take a regular, manual razor to it about once a month. I don’t have to buy shampoo anymore, I just wash the scalp/stubble with regular soap. It’s a lot cooler (heat-wise). Though the scalp-burn SUCKS.
I started shaving my head a couple of years ago. I really just gave up on having hair.
A typical day would be:
[ul]
[li]get up, jog, shower, fix hair[/li][li]skate to work, fix hair[/li][li]play tennis or frisbee at lunch, fix hair[/li][li]squash or trail ride after work, fix hair[/li][li]skate home, fix hair[/li][/ul]
I’m not that attractive. I really don’t need to be spending that much time on my hair.
I used to use a razor, but it was costing me a fortune in those mach3 razors (I find they give a nice burn free shave, 2 bladed razors gum up on me). Now I use the min guard on my eleven dollar clippers. They do a great job so long as you keep them oiled and sharp.
I shave my head every morning with a Norelco[sup]TM[/sup] electric rotary-style razor.
My smooth, bald head is a chick magnet, I tell you!
Aerodynamics, dude.
I considered electric razors, but was put off by the initial cost. At least, the initial cost of the ones that would be flexible enough for a head.
Do they last a long time with you shaving your head?

I shave my head every day with a Mach3. They last, and give a very smooth shave.
Not an athelete…I am a high school teacher. Going smooth is a lot cooler in summer (wear a hat!), easier to maintain (shaving takes time, but less than messing with your hair all day), and it hides the fact that I am going grey at an accelerated rate!
Because it’s seeeeeexxxxxxxxxy.
Yep, it’s the Mach 3 for me, too. I tend to shave about every time I shower, so a good 3-4 times a week. If I nick myself- which ain’t often- it’s not bad. Although, if I may recommed, stay the hell away from the HeadBlade (a razor designed specifically for shaving scalps). I got the worst cut of my life from one of those.
Sunburn’s really the only thing I have to worry about, and I use ScalpSpray to avoid that.
And, if I may say so myself, it IS “seeeeeexxxxxxxxxy”.
Any shaved lady Dopers out there?
umm… heads, that is. We’ve covered the “ladies who shave down below” topic to death.
I’m with my fellow Austinite, Lightnin’, except that I fully endorse the HeadBlade, which hasn’t nicked me much at all.
And it looks cool, too…
I’ll have to find me some ScalpSpray, though…I got a lil pink on the noggin this past weekend, and I’d like to avoid it happening again.
And I’ve had only positive reaction from members of the opposite sex regarding my gleaming cranium.
