I Think I'm Done with Weeds: What's Your JTS?

I loved this show when it was set in the ‘burbs and the action centered around the characters’ neighborhood backstabbing and infidelities. Ever since Nancy & Family fled to SoCal and the Mexican Mafia got involved, I’ve found it less than satisfying to watch (and disappointingly racist in its Latino stereotypes).

I used to root for Nancy when she was a clueless drug-dealer mom, but I realized during the last episode that I could care less if she gets offed and that I was finding the show an obligation rather than a joy. Yup, it’s Jumped the Shark for me.

What are your JTS TV shows and why?

I still watch it but I thought Weeds jumped the shark in the first season itself when Peter gets killed. Out of place within the tone of the show till then.

I think it was in the second season that Peter got killed. It was around that time that I realized that the show had jumped, but I picked up the third season DVD because of the season 2 cliffhanger and out of hopes that the show would improve. Big mistake. The third season managed to get even more ridiculous to me, and that was that. I have no interest in seeing the fourth or fifth seasons.

Yeah, either Peter’s death or burning down Agrestic.

When it was setting her up to be the Godmother of Agrestic California I was completely down with it, but when they setup all the Mexican mob stuff it got to be a bit much.

Wasn’t Peter killed in Season 2?

Yeah, he died in season two. The last episode of season one ended with her finding out he was in the DEA.

I still like it, personally, but I was only introduced to it this year, and watched the first four seasons in about three days. It’s completely over the top and I’m starting to lose sympathy for Nancy, but I still love the character dynamics.

We watched Season 1 of *Grey’s Anatomy *and liked it very much, and then Season 2 was just too much soap opera. We liked the idea of following the young surgical interns, and we liked the Chief and Bailey very much. Haven’t seen it since halfway through Season 2.

Now I think that Peter’s death may have been the beginning of the JTS curve for me . . .

Yeah, it’s clear the writing team have/had to face a creative decision : either keep with the idealized, unrealistic but whacky, character-based fun ; or introduce the reality of drug trading at the expense of The Funny. They obviously went with option 2. I’d call it Cerebus Syndrome rather than Jumping The Shark (which, to me, means you have explored every angle, but still keep going).
