I think I'm gonna buy a new car...

I do not have anything against japanese cars. other than they are way too soft if you get in a wreck, but I am an American. I belive that if you live in America, you buy American. but thats just me.

Well, my bimmer is being built in Spartansburg, SC. American enough for me. And quite frankly, I’ve been staying away from American cars after my first two, a Ford Maverick and a Ford Escort. Both were pieces of shit.

Omniscient: I’m a chick, so I guess it’s OK! Honestly, though, my SO is just as excited about this as I am. I guess it just comes down to taste.

Finally got the thing on order. They’re hard to find! So here’s the stats:

00 Z3 2.3
Topaz Blue
Beige top
Beige leather interior
Wood Trim
Cruise Control
Foglights
Heated seats

Should be here just about when I’m going out of town for a week. Damn. So I’ll be picking it up mid-July. Who wants to be first to go for a ride?

See, your problem with american cars is that you bought 2 of the crummiest cars, if you decided to drop 30-40 thousand on an American car you would have one that would eat up that BMW. but hey at least you bought German

No offense, but that’s kind of like saying you’ll never have a ferarri because you had a fiat once and all italian cars are peice of shit.

“I’ll never have a caddilac cause it’s a GM, and DAMN, have you driven a Chevette? Shit, GM makes about the stinkinest cars on the road.”

Getcherself a Lincoln LS. They start at 32k$. Not as quick as the Mark VIII was, but still nice.

Hey, I never said I was flat out never gonna buy ever again an American car. I have had bad experiences with them, and I’ve known others who have also had the same. I give you that I had shitty cars - my father, a die hard Michigan born & bred American car guy, picked both of them out for me.

That said, could you point me in the direction of a nice sporty car, non-muscle type (ie, no Camaros or Corvettes), for $35K made by an American company? I don’t think it exists. A Mustang is probably the closest, and a few years ago I came close to buying one. I was put off, though, because the interior looked junky to me. Just not high quality. Granted, the Mustang is not as pricey as the BMW. But it’s the closest comparison I can think of.

Also, if you’re willing to spring the extra $$ for a Viper, I’d be happy to drive it for you. That’s a damn nice car…

You’re right not to go with the mustang, the new ones just look cheap and tacky to me. There’s also the Cougar, for sporty and under 35K, but it’s not that great. The speedo goes up to 140, but they wouldn’t do that hurdling off a cliff.

And yes, I know we’re straying away from american cars again… but I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again… DeLorean!

Yeah, but dook, where do I find the flux capacitor? Haven’t seen one on eBay or anyplace else when I went looking…

Bah. We don’t need time travel to have fun. BTW, when you get your DeLorean, you gotta let me drive it.

Coldfire sez:

No, but I’ve seen one in full operation. While driving back to Italy from Austria. We were in my friend’s BMW, a 320i, going really really fast. In other words, it was pegged out, and I was uncomfortable with it.

In the rearview mirror, a small red spot rapidly became a large NSX shaped spot. It passed us without any hesitation, and left us behind like we were standing still.

What a car. I’d love to have one, but I don’t feel like dropping $98,000 for the model I’d like.

fnord1966,

Two things:

  1. Your posts indicate to me that you’ve never really driven a BMW or any other foreign performance car. I’d be interested to see you name an American car for $30K to $40K that could “eat up” any current BMW – even the 3 series. What are you really talking about? Acceleration? Top speed? Handling? Suspension and maneuvering? What?

  2. “Buy American” is the most un-American concept I can think of. Blind loyalty to any specific company or nation will cause a decline in competition that will result in the production of inferior products. That’s why American cars have been so far behind for so long and are just now starting to catch up. This kind of idea sickens me. Don’t be fooled by the idea that we need to buy American in order to support American labor efforts. The best way for a consumer to support American labor efforts is to examine all products critically and purchase only the finest. When American labor produces something worthy, the effort will be rewarded with profit. Until then, there’s no reason to sacrifice the quality of your life. This is not a communist society, no matter what the labor unions say to convince you that it is.

i’d go with dark blue
if you can’t get that, dark green

Dark blue is what I’m getting. It’s officially called “Topaz Blue.”
