Let’s all be mini-Jay Lenos. You have unlimited cash to buy exactly THREE cars, classic or new. What would you get? If really pressed, I’d probably get these:
Last year for that bodystyle, with the stacked headlights before the gnarly Judge showed up, although I am a bit conflicted about losing the 389 tri-power setup in favor of a four barrel 400cid motor. But it’s the best looking GTO, at least to me. The Judge was ugly and frankly, kind of ridiculous.
I am not against resto-mods at all, in fact I prefer them. I would rather a cammed motor, modern suspension/brakes/tires/rearend/gearbox/air conditioning/radio than a true by the numbers classic because I would drive one of them every day. But, I’d want it to look as close to stock as possible.
I’m a fool for hardtop coupes, but the convertible GTO is a true sunshiny day, boulevard cruiser, and my Dad had a 1964 white convertible, which I wish he’d never sold.
I already own 3 collectible cars, 2 restored vintage from the 60’s and a newer, out of production ‘future classic’. I find them a bit impractical because of weather (all roadsters), superhighway unsuitability for the old ones and fear of theft. The newest car is famous for ‘donating’ seats and wheels to Civic owners…
Number one, and favorite car of all time, 61 (only 61, not 62 or 3) Thunderbird convertible, red with all white interior. And since I’ll need a truck to carry all the parts, I’ll take that green 55 Chevy Apache over there. For leisure only, it’s a Triumph TR3. Maybe red again.
His third pick, for some reason, is a 1985 Cadillac El Dorado, which he said he would get heavily modified with all modern internals and everything else while preserving the wire wheels, whitewalls, etc. 1985 Cadillac Eldorado | Full Tour & Start Up - YouTube
In his mind it barely beat out the 1987 Chevy Monte Carlo SS.
My kid is weird, and my 12 year old son seems to care less about cars at all. We’ll see.
1936 knuckle
1945 45
Last one is built by me, piece by piece.
I know they’re not cars, but when I think of ALL the cars I want, I get to the top of the list and have to argue with myself about the order…I look up past the number one car, and there is a list of bikes.
That is in fact an EXTREMELY good looking car, and by the 1990’s, the 911’s became more fun to drive and predictable rather than touchy, twitchy race cars for the street that could only be driven properly if your name was Hans.
I too like the electric cars, but if I had the money for only three I don’t think any Tesla would make my list, no matter how unbelievably fast the S (with LUDICROUS MODE) is. I just don’t think they look all that distinctive. I will say however that the Jag F-Type is one of the sexiest cars Jag ever made, rivaling even the XKE’s from back in the day. And they sound INCREDIBLE if you get the proper 550hp supercharged motor.
I have an extremely fond spot for British roadsters. My Dad had a Triumph Spitfire convertible he bought used in Hawaii that was British Green and he had it painted it canary yellow for some reason. I loved that car, and it was perfect for Hawaii. I remember riding in my Grandfather’s lap (with no seatbelt, gasp!) in the late 1970’s to go to Aloha Stadium to watch the Pro Bowl there, where we sat behind James Francis. I always preferred the TR-8 model, but that’s just me I guess. I also REALLY liked the Sunbeam Tigers.
1 - A Corvette with the biggest engine possible, made sometime in the last 10 years, just for fun.
2 - a 2008 (their last year) For Crown Victoria, with every single option, for road trips.
3 - A scion iQ, just to screw with people.
Some type of Subaru as a mountain car (rough and steep), I like your idea about a Mustang, though I think I’d prefer a 69, and my former boss just got an Aston Martin DB 11. It’s spectacular.
1959 Impala convertible, because, duh, fins.
No better car for a summer drive with friends.
1968 AMC AMX, madator red, white stripes, go pack.
A 1969 would be acceptable, but don’t even think about offering a 1970. Stupid nostrils on that one.
Something for actual everyday winter driving that can tow one of the other two on a trailer. I’m not fussy about this one.
