After vacillating for 6 months, something just clicked. I’m gonna get that BMW Z3. On the phone as I type, getting financing set up. Now all’s I gotta do is find the color I want, and I’m set!
Anyone out there have one? You like it?

Get the blue one.
If I were you, I’d save a few more pennies and get the Boxter…A car fit for a godess!
And then you can come to Vegas and let me drive it!
Do you mean do any of us have a car? or a BMW Z3?
I do have a car, and I like it. It is “Amazon Green”. It is a Ford Ranger. If you get your new car in Amazon Green we can be twins and drive around together. Maybe we could even trade for a while.
Or we could race for pink slips. My only stipulation is that we would each have to have a piano in the trunk.
Co-worker has Z3, raves about it. Even got a little model of it on his desk. I guess it’s nice if you’re into that kinda thing. I like big 'ol convertibles and SUVs.
It is nice to look at, so enjoy!!

I drove a Z3 once. For an afternoon
Great handling, superb build quality. I’m not too fond about the looks myself, but I’d say the light blue metallic looks pretty good on it. Either that, or silver metallic.
But I have to offer a few alternatives, as a car lover. For about the same money (well, a bit more), you can have the Porsche Boxter (as VB said). But, the ultimate choice (if a true sportscar is your thing, rather than a glamourous toy) would be the Lotus Elise. Boy, that is one bad-ass car. No comfort whatsoever, but an extremely triggerhappy street racer that does 0-60 MPH in under 5 seconds. I had the pleasure of driving one in the German countryside a few years ago. The best sportscar that sort of money can buy.
If money is no object whatsoever, there’s nothing like the Ferrari 360 Modena. Or so I’m told… the dealer was rather standoffish and did not want to lend me the car for an afternoon spin. Snobs… I guess driving up to a Ferrari showroom in a Peugeot 306 wasn’t good enough
I say either go for a C5 Vette or a '01 WJ (Grand Cherokee)…thats if i was to get a new car.
Oh boy, I don’t even wanna know how much the auto insurance must be for a Z3…
Me? I’m driving a '93 Ford Festiva. Don’t laugh! It’s paid for!
Actually, the insurance for the Z3 is only about $250 more a year than I’m paying for my ten year old Honda Accord. Not bad at all, in my mind.
I honestly don’t want a Porsche. I’ve been giddy over these Z3’s for about a year now, and it’s definitely the car I want.
Nice one, pluto. I was asking if anyone had a Z3. Next time I need a piano moved, I know who to call.
I’m getting it in Topaz Blue - that’s the darker blue color. Not the most popular color out there, but to me, it’s hands down the best.
Y’know, I’ve done the frugal car thing for a long time now. I did the SUV thing for a while, and honestly didn’t like that. I got the urge to get a nice little sports car about 5 years ago - was originally looking at a Miata, since at the time it was the only thing even remotely in my price range.
I’m giddy. I can’t quite believe I’ve decided to do this. Now if the $#@!%! dealers would get back with me…
Athena,
Welcome to the Bimmer community! Have you ever owned a new BMW before? I purchased mine back in January and it was a delightful experience. Mine was on the lot so the whole thing went down pretty quickly and my dealer was professional and smooth.
I hope that you are ordering your Z3. If you are, you must take advantage of one of the fabulous delivery options that BMW NA offers. Check out the options here. With the Z3, I think your limited to South Carolina pick up. Therefore, you should step up to the $120,000.00+ price tag of the Z8 and go for German delivery. OK, maybe not.
Personally, I don’t care for the styling of the Z3’s back end, but those who do like the styling enough to buy one are always pleased with the performance.
After you buy, you must join the BMW Car Club. Where else are you going to get the opportunity to race your Z3 against other Bimmer drivers? They offer racing and technical classes as well as autocross and rally events.
You’re not just buying a car. You’re buying into a performance loving society with the ultimate driving machine. I know you will be please with your purchase.
Can you tell that I kinda like mine?
THose who want to know what the car looks like can see this 1998 model, not sold at $20,000 & no bids.

If I had the kind of money that I could just go out and buy a Z3, I’d go out and buy a DeLorean…
-dook
DeLorean? DeLorean hasn’t made parts for years has he?
I don’t like the BMW, where would I put the surf stuff or the kids? I wonder how many pounds they are rated to carry? I remember the Mazdas could only take 300lbs of people.
handy:
You can buy a “new” (completely refurbished) DeLorean for about 30K$ in Houston. And I think there’s one in LA or one of those big urban shitholes that sells em for 50k.
I don’t know when//if they stopped making parts, or if some third party is making parts for them now or what, but the place in houston has a big warehouse full of parts. Every DeLorean restoration page I find on the web seem to get their parts from there.
-dook the rabid DeLorean fanatic
Athena, cool. Don’t get the damn Porsche. The Z3 is a better car on all acounts when you consider cost, maintence and performance. You will gain a few performance numbers in excange for $15,000 more and a hell of alot of headaches.
Anyways, I hate the Z3 for me, alwasy thought it was a chick car…but its fits for you ;). Now if I only had my M3…I love Bimmers.
Tell you what - you go buy one of everything you’re considering, and I’ll test drive them for a few years for you. My '93 Ford Probe just isn’t cutting it. Chicks don’t seem to be real up for a “ride in my Probe.” Huh.
Glad to help.
NOOOOOOOOO!
well I guess it would be ok. Just promise me, dont get a Japanese import. I would prefer you get an american car, but German is better than nothing.
Personally I have been looking for a car for around 5 years. It isnt your ordinary car, in fact it is quite rare. I want a '70,'71,'72 Plymouth Barracuda. Either the 426 Mas Wedge, the 426 HEMI, or the 440 Six Pack,
Just got home to find a invitation to a special BMW Driving experience! Gonna get to take and bimmer I want onto a track :D.
Ironic, no?
speaking of small sports cars, I personally love my 1991 Toyota MR2. Its small, fast, and the engine is in the right place, the back. Yes, it only has 2 seats, yes its only a 2.0 liter 4 cyc, but damn I’ve never driven anything that is as much fun
Before my 1991, I had a 1986 Toyota MR2 – There is a big difference between the handling of the two cars. The 1991 feels like a sports car, the 1986 felt like driving a gocart. Both a blast. If I ever have the oppertunity, I’d love to own them both
Wow. Such knowledge. Have you ever driven a Honda NSX? Or a Subaru Impreza GT Turbo? Mitsubishi Lancer EVO 6? You’d be surprised how many American (and European) cars are left in the dust by these. And those are just a few examples. Besides, a lot of Japanese cars are being manufactured in the US or in Europe these days.
Isn’t there an ad lately for a Mitsubishi that can do 0 to 60 in 3.1 seconds? That my be the best you can buy these days, right? Legally.
