You’ve got to be kidding. That was not an honestly intentioned thread. It was clearly intended as a poke at the “Positive Gun News Thread.” engineer was right to close it.
Maybe it is. But then, why is that a reason to close it? Just recently, a poster made a thread in CS called “least sexy video” or similar. It was very clearly a thread designed to poke fun at a previous thread called “most sexy video.”
But I argue that’s not quite the point. It isn’t poking fun, but trying to make a point. It would be entirely unreasonable to allow a thread about abortion in IMHO where everyone must agree it is a positive or not be allowed to post. No one can consider stopping guns as “positive gun news.”
So, in the abortion thread, consistent moderation would mean that no one would be able to post that stopping abortions was positive news, or that abortions in general are a bad thing. Furthermore, those who agree with that moderation would see exactly what it would be like from the other side. How would they like it if something they were vehemently against was moderated in the same manner?
Such a thread is just the natural consequence of your current moderating decision, rather than a mockery.
“A poke at” is not the same thing as “trolling”. This is a bullshit warning. But it’s no surprise as it arises out of earlier bullshit modding, so par for the course.

I think it was a “poke” at the gun thread, but it was also an interesting topic to discuss. I saw some real stories people put forward about how abortions made their lives better. That it was a “poke” doesn’t warrant closing, much less a warning, IMO. The thread should be reopened and the warning rescinded, IMO. The 2nd post, by the OP, was a serious and revealing (and very personal!) story about abortion.
If this doesn’t happen, can I (or someone else) open a new thread? Having a thread in which people can talk about how abortion has been a positive factor in their (or someone else’s) lives could be very positive, IMO.
Goddamn right it was, and boy did it work to show how biased the moderating is on this issue.
Tell us again how it’s ok for gun rights supporters to have their safe space to talk about all the wonderful times the ‘correct’ person was killed with a gun, but other rights supporters don’t get to have their safe space to talk about the benefits of their rights.

I agree both that it was clearly started with the intent to mock and/or snark at the moderation of the Positive Gun News thread, and also that a Positive Abortion News thread had potential benefit. Sadly, the quibbling about the gun thread (and while I admit to being one of the quibblers in that thread, I kept it over there) has resulted in that potential being immediately squandered.
Personally I’d like to see the thread re-opened with a mod note about not bringing baggage from the gun thread into it. I’d certainly like to hear people’s positive experiences with abortion (or as positive as they can be, given the topic). It’s a subject where that side of the argument doesn’t get much attention. And perhaps change it to “Positive Abortion Stories” rather than specifically “News”.

Concur that the warning and the closure are unnecessary. Let the thread peter out on its own.
If the idea is to show how anti-abortion posters will thread shit a thread about positive abortion stories, they won’t. Same thing with the Positive Gun Control thread - if a minority of Dopers are upset that they don’t have a safe space, let it become clear that they do. Whereupon the thread will drop off into obscurity.
The idea that the SDMB isn’t already a safe space for liberals is pretty silly. Don’t let’s feed the persecution complexes.

It had serious content, and there wasn’t any mocking of the other thread even hinted at.
My thread on good gun control news can be seen as a reaction to the positive gun news thread-should it be closed too, and should I also get a warning for trolling?
I’d like it to be significantly more obviously trolling before threads are closed and warnings issued. And in this specific case, even if it was partly meant as a dig on that other thread, given the discussion about that thread, this should get some significant latitude. I think this was a rare moderating error.
IANAM but to me it comes down to the same thing as some other Mod actions; implied intent from the poster. As this grew out of the other ATMB thread one could debate that it was as much spite as humor. That, at least to me, puts it over the top into the “jerkish” mode at the least.
I caught the thread shortly after it was started and visited a couple times. It was different from the Gun thread in that it started with a personal account rather than published news reports. But knowing the background it was hard to take any of it as serious as I would have wished. In a parody would it be wrong to stretch the events to make your point? I think giving it a head shot and putting it away was the best action and when you look how few of the posts were on topic …

Didn’t one of the mods tell you to go ahead and start a thread? And you announced it here? And a mod commented in your thread that others need to remember the rules? And then you THANKED the moderator who chimed in?
If so, why ask if you should get a warning, or if the thread should be closed?

Engineer Comp Geek, what did I say or imply in that thread indicating that I was trolling in that thread? All my posts there were sincere and personal. Everyone’s posts were sincere except the one guy determined to bring the threadshitting and rules-lawyering.
There was no point to be made until you decided there was one. Kindly consider explaining the reasoning, re-opening the thread, and rescinding the warning.

Whether or not this was meant to “poke fun” at the gun news thread (as others have already said, I would also not have started a parody thread with a heartfelt personal anecdote like that), the thread started out fine and was looking like a perfectly valid, perfectly reasonable thread right up until people barged into it assuming it was parody and tried to be dicks about it. The only person in that thread who was anywhere near trolling was manson.
