All together now:
“AwWwwwWWwwwwWWWw!”
Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww !
Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww!
Update us later on how the evening goes…
Aaaawwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww…!
Wait.
You’re the dad, right? Ok. You need to test him. When he/they get home, take him aside and say “son, my buddies Bubba Jr, Jailbird and I are going huntin’ next weekend. I want you to join us. What? Oh, don’t worry 'bout that… I got lots of guns. Me and you can talk about…[glance over at your daughter, lower your voice] some stuff. Hopefully, we can come to an… understanding”.
His reaction will be very telling.
No no no. That’s what I did when he first asked her out!
My daughter is generally clueless about many things However, even she took me aside before she left and asked if anything was up.
Don’t know girl, don’t know.
I give it a 3 in 4 chance.
Very sweet. It sounds like you approve?
Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww!
Better break out the good bottle of brandy and start thinking about what suit you’re going to wear
Seriously tho, is he a good guy? Does he have a job and the ability to keep it? How old are they?
Awwwwwwww.
Updates?
Awwwwwwwwww. Well?
I like either
A)I got no problem going back to jail
or
B)Anything you do to her, I’m gonna do to you.
He’ll never have grandchildren.
If she comes home tonight and says, “Guess what!!!” Don’t guess “You got engaged?!” for two reasons… 1. if it’s true she doesn’t really want you to guess it, she wants to tell you, and 2. it might not have happened and she might be telling you something else.
Trust me on this.
He didn’t come talk to you first to ask for her hand?
Or…maybe he proposes and she isn’t quite ready to say ‘Yes’.
Regardless…
AWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!
And yes, you must update or we will haunt you
Probably not. This is an antiquated practice stemming from when women were considered property. My dad told me years ago that if a guy ever ask him for my hand in marriage the answer would be no because he wouldn’t want me to marry a guy who thought I was my father’s to give away. Unless of course I really wanted to marry him anyway…I mean, he wasn’t going to prevent me from marrying a guy just because he had misguided old fashioned ideas if I really wanted to.
I called the dad before I proposed, but it wasn’t to ask for my girlfriend’s hand in marriage, it was just to give him a heads up and to say that I hoped for his blessings. I agree that in this day and age asking for a father’s permission to marry is antiquated and weird, but I still think having a quick chat with pops to tell him what’s what before popping the question is sweet and most fathers will appreciate it.
Also, don’t panic when she tells you, like my father did. Our actual conversation:
Me: Dad, I have some news - we’re getting married!
Dad: To who!?
Me [patiently]: To each other, Dad.
