So, in another thread about the worst of American cooking, the recipe featured on this YouTube video was almost unanimously reviled. The worst of the worst, it was decided.
I posted that an evil voice in my head was urging me to try it. So, I made some.
Aaaannnnd…it didn’t kill me. Not yet anyway.
Some observations. I can tell you that the SCM/sugar/vinegar/mayonaise sauce tastes exactly like KFC’s coleslaw dressing. I mean, I don’t think I could tell the difference between the two. It’s that close. Maybe it is the KFC coleslaw dressing, I dunno.
I ate a reasonable portion, and it was okay going. As I got to the last few bites, I felt I was getting a little, well, not nauseous. But I really did not want seconds, I can say that for sure. I wouldn’t bring this to a potluck. Not one where everyone knows who brought what.
On the other hand, my 86 year old mom really liked it. She licked her plate clean.
I only made half the recipe. So now, I have a half a can of sweetened condensed milk I don’t know what to do with. My mom suggested making a pudding or something with it. Does anybody have any ideas?
In the video for the recipe, the salad looked very soupy. Did your version have too much dressing?
As for the sweetened condensed milk, I keep some around in a squeeze bottle (La Lechera brand) to put in my black tea. Hispanics like to put it on fried bananas or pancakes.
I’ve had open cans of leftover sweetened condensed milk in the refrigerator, but like open cans of leftover frosting, they got empty fast! I’ve read you can use SCM to make chai tea, there are recipes to be googled.
I figured it would be the kind of thing one would only want one small serving of, yeah. But to be honest, I’m not surprised that it isn’t disgusting. Some of the tastiest things I have eaten are really, really ‘gross’ if you think of the ingredients.
If you can find good strawberries a little drizzle of SCM is a really good treat. You could even slice the strawberries and spoon them over shortbread if you wanna get all hoity-toity.
1 Cup water
2/3 Cup white sugar
1/2 Cup walnuts
4 egg whites
2/3 Cup cornstarch
1 pound shrimp (large) peeled and deveined, tails removed
1/4 Cup mayonnaise
2 Tbsp honey
1 Tbsp sweetened condensed milk
1 Cup hot vegetable oil for frying
In a small saucepan, mix water and sugar. Bring to a boil. Add walnuts and boil for 2 minutes. Drain and place on a baking sheet to dry.
Beat egg whites in a medium bowl until foamy. Stir in cornstarch until it makes a somewhat thick batter. Batter the shrimp with this, and fry it in the oil, in batches. Drain the fried shrimp on paper towels.
In a serving bowl, mix the mayo, the condensed milk, and the honey. toss the shrimp in the glaze. Add the walnuts.
I don’t know what you’d use for the fruit puffs, some softish candy (the nearest I can describe them is like dried out marshmallow in texture, but a sweet fruity flaour.
Malt biscuits are the best to crush, but any plain biscut will do.
I have no excuse to make these any more since my kid is into healthy food, so please please let me live vicariously through your experimentation. I’d be really interested to see how you adapt it for local ingredients.
