Cheers, Toddly. Well, I’m using the non-SDMB style now, because I like to see locations. I’ll make do until something else turns up. The staff here are doing the best they can – “location” is small stuff compared with keeping the whole board functioning. I’m happy with what I’ve got.
I lkes being from Dallas Georgia USA/Rothenburg ob der Tauber Deutschland!
Disclaimer: I’m a geek who knows nothing whatsoever about computers. Steam turbines, I’m okay; magical black boxes, not so much. Please cure my ignorance.
What I actually understand from this thread is the following:[ul]* Viewing “locations” may depend on which skin I choose from the little pull-down menu thingy at the bottom of the page.
-
Viewing locations may also depend on which browser I’m using.
-
Different browsers show the page differently depending on which skin is chosen.[/ul]
Is that right? Because, if so, I have a question.
I use a different browser at work (Netscape something-or-other) than at home (IE 6.0).
What do I have to do to show member locations and keep the board readable on both (crappy) machines?
Please keep in mind that I’m a no-knowing dumbass. Thank you.
I think the browser shouldn’t much matter - whether Location is shown or not depends on the HTML produced on the server side.
You should just have to use the Straight Dope Message Board vBulletin 3 Style skin (the one with the vBulletin logo instead of the SD one). Drawbacks - only about 2/3 width of the screen are used; No SD logo (as I said already). OTOH, I actually like the default colors better than the SD ones (The bright blue hurts my eyes); and I get to see the Location field…

It looks like “brightlinks” is the best for me. It doesn’t shrink the pages and location is shown.
Also, “standard” shows location but doesn’t highlight threads that you have already opened before, which is annoying.
