I admit it, I am a zombie hound. I have a few zombie movies, and want more. I ran out of titles though, I need some input from people with a passion for some brain eatin’ to help me out. These movies I already have, can anyone recommend some more. No criteria really, just have zombies!
Land Of The Dead
Dawn of The Dead (Both)
Night of the Living Dead (both)
Day of the Dead (original, though I heard someone is making a remake soon )
28 Days Later (Qualifies as a zombie flick, IMHO)
Resident Evil 1/2
Shaun Of The Dead
Day of the Dead 2: Contagium (worst. one. ever.)
The Return of the Living Dead
Return of the Living Dead Part 2
Return of the Living Dead 3
As well as have the two made for TV ones, that sucked about as bad as the first three in the Romeroless Living Dead series
Return of the Living Dead 4
Return of the Living Dead 5
So any help fellow brain eaters?
Well what yer missin’ there is, in my opinion, only the greatest zombie movie of all time: Dead Alive!!! Get it. Get it now.
Also, pick up some Fulci flicks: Zombie, City of the Living Dead, The Beyond and House by the Cemetery all qualify as zombie movies in one way or another.
And The Dead Next Door is a fantastic zombie film with tons of shout-outs to other famous zombie movies and directors (characters with names like Ash, Romero, etc.). It was real hard to find there for awhile, but I swear I saw it in Suncoast the other day!!
Serpent and the Rainbow has an interesting history. The book is a non-fiction account of the zombie phenomena by a botanist who has worked for Harvard and National Geographic magazine. The movie is a horror schlock with only about this much more connection to the book he bought the rights to than the title. IIRC, Davis sued (unsuccessfully) to have the name of the film changed and his name removed from source material credits.
Dead Alive is that the same as Braindead? I just googled it and now I am this close holds fingers an inch apart to kicking my butt. Little backstory, my brother offered me Brain Dead this past weekend, I didn’t google and assumed it was a comedy I vaguely remembered, I think I was wrong.
As for your other suggestions I am in the middle of the online hunt to find those.
Ah I see, after I IMDBed it I realized my mistake. I never watched Braindead, but I did watch a mildy (non zombie) amusing movie named Brain Donors. And I got them confused, which is why I turned down his offer. I already left him a message to call me back, I want that movie now. (Dead Alive aka Braindead)
I’d recommend the Evil Dead trilogy; although the second and third lean more toward comedy than horror. Also in a comedic vein: Dead & Breakfast, which is either horrible or over-the-top hilarious, depending on your taste, and Undead, a relatively recent Aussie pic that is by turns funny and strange.
Then of course there’s the classic Carnival of Souls. Dead and Buried is a neat little underappreciated flick. In the foreign aisle, Versus is pretty good. I’m waiting for the US release of Dellamorte Dellamore, myself.
Ed and his Dead Mother. It’s not a “hordes of zombies shuffling forward to break down your door” movie, but I think it qualifies. It’s a really messed up* comedy with Steve Buscemi and Miriam Margolyes.
*Though if you watch it after Dead Alive, it will seem like The Sound of Music.
Wow thanks for the great leads, I am really happy there are even more zombie flicks out there then I had realized. Now I have a mission to track them all down.
Sorry about that, I forgot it is also known as Braindead. Hands down, my favourite film ever.
Along those same lines, Peter Jackson’s first film Bad Taste, while technically an alien movie, has some very zombie-esque elements to it and some fantastic gore. The “aliens” (just guys wearing blue jumpsuits, until much later in the movie) shamble around like zombies, and eat people as well.
Hmmm…this is driving me crazy, I know I have some other good ones at home but my mind is drawing a blank! Now if you want some recommendations as to some good Herschell Gordon Lewis movies, I’m your girl…
AAH! How could I have forgotten this one? I almost named my cat Nagi, fer chrissakes.
Yes, this is a must-have, great zombies and breath-takingly beautiful as well. Also known as Cemetery Man. I have a VHS copy I ordered off of eBay, I think.
I also just remembered a movie Mr. Bunny and I rented many years ago, I believe released by Fangoria, I, Zombie. Not bad at all, if somewhat of a downer.
