I loved him, LOVED HIM, but I got the call… I put him down like a sick animal."
I know it’s from a gangster-type-movie I’ve seen several times, but for the life of me I can’t put my finger on it.

True Romance maybe? I’m not sure, but it does sound familiar.
Nick of Time
Thanks, I guess it was Nick of Time.
Funny I don’t remember loving that movie too much, but I loved that line.
It’s actually a great little movie. The premise isn’t that innovative (blackmailing a random person into assassinating a political figure), but every performance is top notch, especially Walken and Roma Maffia (what a pair!).
Nick of Time is a great, underrated little action movie that probably was a big influence on the TV show 24 (the real-time structure, and the heroic lead character being blackmailed into assassinating a politician in the first season).
And I’ll just use this flimsy excuse to dust off one of my lesser poems:
Two mice fell in a bucket of cream
A desperate fate, a struggle met
The white flow a soft cold dream
That pulled them down, a nightmare threat.
One mouse drowned, a life submit
The other thrashed, he wouldn’t quit
His life was his, and strongly earned
All the cream to butter, churned.
I’ve earned your faith, a job, a house,
As the mouse crawled out, to live his life.
I’ve earned the love of my son and wife.
I stand before you; I am that mouse.
