Identify this dog breed

I have adopted a dog roughly 3 weeks ago. She was from a litter of 6 that were all up for adoption. These dogs we were told are black labradour retriever / golden retriever mixes. All the dogs seemed to have the black lab dominant, the ears, coat, etc., all seemed mainly to be black lab. The girl we adopted is mostly black, with a bit of golden fur intermixed on the back of her neck. Now the only thing that has left me wondering is that she has white spots on both of her rear paws, as well as pure white spots under her chin and under her neck. This has me wondering what other breed may be being exhibited, as I don’t believe either a black lab or a golden retriever could cause her to have any pure white fur. Is there anyone out there that could give a hint? I’m almost of the mind that she may have some newfoundland in her, as a landseer would of course have some pure white fur.

This could be border collie. I have a black dog that has brownish fur on his paws and chest, and my local agility trainer told me that white or tan there is often border.

I adopted a dog that sounds similar to your description two years ago. ( pictures ).

We were told he was a “Spaniel-mix”. We often get asked if he’s a German Shepherd pup, but he’s defiantely full grown (though quite small -a lap dog, really).

At first, we guessed he may have been part Daschshund, because of his narrow midsection; but then he put on a bit of weight, so we figured that may have been from rationed food at the pound.

The we figured he might have a bit of Corgi in him (Cardigan, not Welsh with the stubby little legs). He has the face almost exactly!

Then, we saw him run! This dog can bolt like you wouldn’t believe! So now, we’re leaning toward Border Collie. I know they tend to run in those courses with the slides and flagpoles and such at dog shows, and Dakota would do well at that with his speed.

Anyway, for a frame fo reference, are my pictures close to your dog? Can you link to a picture for us?

I have a Lab/Border Collie mix (we know exactly what she is because we met the owners of the mother, a full-bred Border Collie).

Does your dog look anything like mine? Admittedly, she’s very heavy on the Border Collie. All her brothers (there were 12 puppies and she was the only girl!) were solid black.

I did that link wrong. Sorry…

I would favour the border collie mix, however, does your dog have a squarish boxy muzzle and a rather large hooter on the end ?

If so this would make me think more toward spaniel mix.

I’ve seen labrador/spaniel and labrador/border collie mixes and they were both fairly similar, except the spaniel mix has a tendency to put on weight and is more manic around people, and the border collie does what they do, and runs around quartering rather more.

I really can’t describe her behaviour too well, this is the first I’ve been around a puppy in a long time and I’m not sure what’s just her young age and what’s characteristic of the breed.

Here’s a pic of a Labradour/Border Collie mix up for adoption:

The white on this dog is far more pronounced than mine. The only solid white on our girl is on her rear paws; on her chest is a patch of white and black fur mixed, same under the chin.

The ears on this dog seem longer and hang lower, while the shoulders seem wider.
Tomorrow I’ll hopefully be able to get some pics up of our dog. What may be significant is I’ve seen pictures of a black Labradour/Newfoundland mix that looked almost identical to our dog, just with legs that seemed more ‘squat’ or short.

DakotaDog, your pup is adorable. Aren’t mutts the best?

friedo, proud owner of many mutts.
