"If" He Did It?? Simpson Tell-(almost)All

Among other reasons, there were reportedly a dozen or so FOX affiliates that steadfastly refused to broadcast the show. When Rupert saw that he must have realized what a stupid idea it really was.

I cannot fault her with refusing to sell it, even if she wouldn’t special order it. She’s basically saying-I will not profit from his misdeeds.

Of course all this is moot now since it’s been cancelled. (Although I’m sure they’ll find a publisher).

What about pharmacies that refuse to sell Plan B? They too don’t want to profit from others supposed “misdeeds”. And with the case of O.J., his misdeeds were never proven in court. As tacky as his book idea is, and whether he really did it or not, I would say I would have to fault book stores that refuse to carry it. The demand would be very high for this book, why would a retailer refuse what the public wants to read? What retailer is against certain books by certain authors? Are they owned by Disney, or cousins of Kim Jong?

Sorry, I’m very against banning of material in any form based on a personal belief when you retail for the public. But hey, they have that right to do so I suppose…

I also heard that O.J. wouldn’t profit from this, and that the proceeds would go to his children. I’m unsure if this has been substantiated or not, or if it’s even possible.

Hmmm, well, good point. I don’t know-I can see how she feels, and I’d probably feel the same way. But on the other hand, I loathe people who try to stop others from purchasing things they personally disagree with.

Why wouldn’t it be possible?

I have a friend who watches Fox News because he believes that Fox is “fair and balanced” and has the closest alignment to American morals, compared to hedonistic, lefty news departments like ABC, CBS, NBC, and perhaps worst of all, PBS!

Granted Fox Network is probably run by different people than Fox News, but it’s owned by the same guy, who clearly cares about one thing and one thing only - money. Fox is “fair and balanced” because a shitload of people buy that line of crap. If it was more lucrative to be “left and loving it” they would do that instead.

I found this entire episode to be absolutely shameful for News Corp, Murdoch, and his minions. OJ is clearly a narcissistic dumbass; he should be relegated to the slag heap of obscurity.

(but I still would have watched it if Fox aired it)

I think he meant, “possible to substantiate.”

Which part? Where O.J. wouldn’t profit, or that profits would go to his kids?

With O.J. and profits, he technically can profit from it, but he wouldn’t want to. The profits would go to his lawsuit debts.

The part that I wasn’t sure about is how his kids would get those profits if that’s the route they would take, because wouldn’t they have to go through O.J. first? And if goes through him first, he’s got to pay the plaintiffs first, I think. That’s where I’m confused.

Welcome to the mixed feelings crowd. Supposedly, Borders was going to donate their profits from the book to charity.

This morning’s paper said that the money is going (has gone?) directly to O.J.'s kids; how that works I don’t know.

He got a $2 million advance.

I wish I could get $2 million for not writing a book.

It’s like a government subsidy. There’s too many authors out there in the market right now so to keep book prices high they’ve got to pay writers not to use a certain percentage of their brain in the production of novels.

I don’t believe the Plan B analogy draws an accurate parallel.

Doctors, nurses, and pharmacists swear an oath, hold specific credentials, and answer to a governing body. Once a medication is approved by the FDA, they are obligated to provide it as part of the care afforded any patient. The pharmacy is neither the time nor the place to work out ethical dilemmas. That’s what we have the oath, the credentials, the governing bodies, and the FDA for.

A bookseller is a business person. So long as their behavior falls within legal parameters, they are free to determine what services and products they offer, and then they can face the economic consequences of their choices. There are, after all, booksellers who probably refuse to carry the Harry Potter series. I think they’re dorks, but hey, it’s their call, and they probably won’t ever miss my business. I just wish the bookseller metioned upthread had the guts to refuse to sell OJ’s book in any shape, manner, or form.

As for OJ, I suspect that he will find doors closed in his face for the rest of his life. His picture could go alongside the OED definition of infamy. I hope his children get the help they need to deal with their murdering father. I hope the Goldmans and Browns can take a little comfort from just how repugnant most people found this abortion of a stunt.

Speaking of which…

But at least OJ can’t benefit from those sales.
